The Munich Cowboys are an American football club from Munich . The club plays its home games in the Dante Stadium . The club is one of the oldest football clubs in Germany.

history

The Munich Cowboys were founded on March 17th, 1979 in a pub in Munich. The first president was founding member Werner Forster. As a founding member, the Cowboys took part in the Football Bundesliga, today's German Football League (GFL), which was created in the same year . The Cowboys are one of the oldest still existing football teams in Germany.

Their greatest success to date was achieved in the 1993 season by winning the German championship with a 42:36 after extra time against the Cologne Crocodiles . After the 2002 season , in which bankruptcy proceedings were already in progress, the Cowboys rose by losing to the Marburg Mercenaries in relegation from the GFL. A club dissolution was just averted and a start in the 2nd Bundesliga was waived. Instead, the game was started in the Regionalliga-Süd in 2003, from which the direct promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga succeeded. Already in 2004 the promotion to the GFL Süd was successful.

The return to the House of Lords did not go as hoped. You could not establish yourself and only not relegated after the 2005 season because only 5 teams played in the GFL South. In the 2006 season they fell short of expectations. The change of coach during the season brought a slight upturn, but the relegation could not be avoided, in which the Weinheim Longhorns , as champions of the 2nd League South, prevailed. So the cowboys got down for the second time in 4 years. But in the 2007 season , with only one point loss due to a draw with the second-placed Franken Knights , the direct return to the GFL. As a climber, the Cowboys sensationally reached third place in the table in the 2008 season and thus the play-offs again for the first time in 7 years. But there was already the last stop in the quarterfinals, they were defeated by the later German champions Braunschweig Lions with 10:32. The 2009 season ended the men's team as bottom of the GFL and they had to relegate to the Franken Knights. There she was able to assert herself and win both relegation games, so that in 2010 it was possible to participate in the GFL, which the Cowboys finished with 5th place.
