M83 is a French electronic / dream pop - band . It is named after the galaxy Messier 83 and was founded in Antibes in 2000 by the two musicians Nicolas Fromageau and Anthony Gonzalez.

history

The duo achieved international fame by using the title Unrecorded from their album Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts for a trailer for the film Night Guard - Nochnoi Dozor .

In the summer of 2009 they played as the opening act for Depeche Mode on their world tour "Tour Of The Universe".

In December 2011, the German music portal laut.de chose the song Midnight City from the 2011 album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming as song of the year 2011. In 2013, the title was used in the advertising campaign for Renault Captur . The song was also used in the 2013 film Warm Bodies directed by Jonathan Levine . Since the 2016/2017 NFL season, the German sports program ran has been using the song regularly for commercial transitions for its American football broadcasts.

Also in 2011, the tracks Intro , Outro and My Tears Are Becoming a Sea from Hurry Up, We're Dreaming were used in the soundtrack of the sports documentary The Art of Flight and gained greater notoriety due to the popularity of the film.

In 2013, Gonzales produced the complete score for Joseph Kosinski's science fiction film Oblivion together with Joseph Trapanese . For the single of the same name Oblivion , the featuring took place with Susanne Sundfør . M83 also contributed the song I Need You to the film The Determination - Divergent . In 2014, the title Wait , also from the album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming , was found in the films Das Schicksal ist ein lous Verräter , Three Steps to You and in an episode Under the Dome and Outro in the film The Gambler with Mark Wahlberg Use. In 2015, My Tears Are Becoming A Sea was also used in the movie Providence . The soundtrack of the Italian mafia thriller Suburra from 2015 contains a selection of 13 songs from M83's studio albums, including Midnight City, Sister (Part 1 + 2), Wait and Outro .

In 2016 Hurry Up, We're Dreaming - Outro was used as the theme music for the Franco-Canadian television series Versailles , which is about the life of the young Louis XIV at the court of Versailles.

The seventh studio album Junk was released on April 8, 2016, followed by DSVII in September 2019.

style

The two founding members came from the post-rock style , but decided to enter the electronics scene with the establishment of M83. Although the two musicians rely heavily on the use of synthesizers , they borrow from the 1970s both in the structure of their pieces and in the design of their videos. With the use of synthesizers, alienated guitar tracks and text that is spoken out loud over the instrumental pieces, M83 create a sound that is reminiscent of bands like My Bloody Valentine , Slowdive and Cocteau Twins as well as Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream .
