occupation

The Art of Flight ([ ði ɑ: rt ɑ: v flaɪt ], German: Die Kunst des Fliegens) is a documentary by director Curt Morgan about the winter sport of snowboarding . The cinema premiere was on September 7, 2011 at the Beacon Theater in New York City , on November 8, 2011 the European premiere was at the Cinemaxx in Munich. "The Art of Flight" is the successor to the documentary "That's It, That's All" from 2008.

production

The film production was largely financed by the beverage manufacturer Red Bull and the sporting goods manufacturer Quiksilver and produced by Red Bull Media House , Brain Farm Digital Cinema and Lighthouse Home Entertainment. The director justified the challenge and his artistic claim for the elaborate documentary as follows: “The snowboard audience is not very large. It's a challenge to make our stories and our sport interesting for the mainstream, we want to push the boundaries and become interesting for a wide audience, we want to redefine the action sports film. "

Filming

The shooting stretched from 2009 to 2011, the film accompanied the American professional snowboarder Travis Rice and 16 of the world's best riders freeriding and straight jumps in several, both accessible and remote mountain regions for two years . The documentation is divided into seven episodes according to the changing locations and has a total length of 80 minutes. The individual episodes have a similar sequence and document the organizational preparations, the journey to the mountain and the descent after a presentation of the names of the snowboarders involved. The episodes have no constructive plot and no relation to one another. Preparations are by voice-overs highlighted. The actors arrive mostly with multi-purpose helicopters of the type Eurocopter AS350 B3 , so that the winter sports enthusiasts could be set down directly on mountain tops and the injured could be rescued immediately. The AS350 B3 can accommodate five snowboarders and a cameraman; its Turboméca Arriel 2B1 turbine has been upgraded and is designed for use in extreme outside temperatures and at high altitudes.

Extensive preparations were necessary for the filming in the Snake River Mountains. Six workers on sledges needed three days to create a path for the film team to the location, and another to transport the 360 kg equipment there, including 80 kg of ballast for the cantilever arm of the phantom camera.

The film was published in a cinema and IMAX version as well as on iTunes and the storage media DVD-Video , Blu-ray Disc and in 2012 in a stereoscopic version (BD3D). Red Bull also commissioned Brain Farm to produce an eight-part television series that focuses on the making-of of the documentary.

Cameras

Different film cameras were used for the shooting . The slow-motion recordings were shot with the high-speed Phantom HD Gold and Flex cameras from Vision Research. For the point-of-view shots came Action camcorder Hero by GoPro used. As digital cinema camera that was RED One with a resolution of 4,5K used. The making-of , which was produced at the same time, was recorded in full HD (1080p) with a Panasonic AJ-HPX3700 VariCams camcorder .

The spherical camera V14 HD from the manufacturer Cineflex was used for the aerial film recordings . Gyroscopes keep the Sony CineAlta HDC 1500 camera largely free of vibrations, which enables blur-free recordings even with a large zoom up to a focal length of 1760 mm. According to the director's estimate, 60% of the recordings were made with the Cineflex camera. Although the Cineflex originally designed to be mounted on helicopters, Morgan also has holders for a Ford F-150 , snowmobiles , quads type Polaris Ranger XP , groomers designed and lifts.

Reviews

“An action sports film of this quality and visual power had never been seen before. It's not because of the stunts that Morgan shows, not because of the breathtaking descents and jumps of snowboard superstars like Morgan's American co-producer Travis Rice, it's also not because of the great landscapes, you already have all of this in others Seen snowboard and ski productions, no, that is, quite profane, due to the technical and financial resources of the project, which enabled Morgan to shoot images of monumental beauty. "

“Roaring guys with Viking helmets (sic! Means: with horned helmets ), who run through the forest and shoot trees, can be found funny, but you don't have to. And also the fact that the snowboarders around Travis Rice are constantly cruising through the area with helicopters and snowmobiles instead of climbing the mountains on foot can and should be discussed.
