The Naked and Famous is a New Zealand electro - band from Auckland .
Band history
Singer Alisa Xayalith and musicians and vocalists Thom Powers and Aaron Short met in 2006 at the Music and Audio Institute in Auckland. Xayalith and Powers dropped out and joined forces under the name The Naked and Famous . In the same year they produced two EPs as a duo. They also performed in the US at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York. During this time they were already supported by the audio engineering student Short. In early 2009 they found two more musicians for their live performances: bassist David Beadle and drummer Jesse Wood, who had gone to the same high school as Powers and Short, so that the band consisted of five members from now on.
The New Zealanders had their immediate breakthrough in 2010 with the single Young Blood . It went straight to number 1 on the New Zealand charts and reached platinum status (15,000 units sold). Young Blood achieved gold status in the United States with over 500,000 singles sold. The song reached over 25 million clicks on YouTube and Vevo . They also received the APRA Silver Scroll , the New Zealand songwriting award for the song. The debut album Passive Me, Aggressive You , released three months later , also reached the top of the album charts and was awarded gold .
In early 2011 there were first publications and appearances in Great Britain. They were included in the Sound of 2011 list of the most promising newcomers in 2011 by the BBC . In Germany, Young Blood became known, among other things, for the trailers that the music broadcaster VIVA used to advertise its channel restructuring on January 1, 2011. Debut single and album were also released in Europe in March. In 2013 the band performed for the first time in Germany (Cologne, Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin and Hamburg). This was followed by a festival appearance at Rock am Ring in June and the second tour of Germany in September.
For the film " The Art of Flight ", a snowboard documentary about Travis Rice, two singles, Young Blood and No Way , were used as the soundtrack .
On March 18, 2013, the band posted a video of a concert recording at The Warfield in San Francisco entitled One Temporary Escape on their website . One Temporary Escape was free to download from their website.
At the end of April 2013, the band gathered again in the studio to complete work on their second studio album. In May the band announced new tour dates. The Naked and Famous gave concerts in America and Europe from September to December. In Germany there were performances in Frankfurt, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich and Cologne in November. On September 13th In Rolling Waves was released in Germany. Rolling Waves was recorded in Los Angeles and co-produced by Justin Medal-Johnson, who has worked with M83 , the Nine Inch Nails and Beck . The album was then mixed in London by Alan Moulder . The hit single Hearts like Ours was featured on Zane Lowe's radio show along with an interview with Thom Powers. From February to March The Naked and Famous were the opening act for the North American tour of the band Imagine Dragons .
On November 20, 2014, the band announced on Facebook that they wanted to release a third album. The album Simple Forms was released on October 14, 2016. The first single, Higher , was released on July 7, 2016 and reached second place in the Heatseeker Singles in New Zealand.
In 2018 the two founding members Aaron Short and Jesse Wood left the band, so that the band only consists of Alisa Xayalith and Thom Powers. In November 2019, Sunseeker released the first single from the fourth studio album Recover .
