history

2008 to 2010: Foundation and musical beginnings

In 2008, lead singer Daniel Reynolds met drummer Andrew Tolman at Brigham Young University , which they both attended. After starting to make music together, Reynolds and Tolman brought Andrew Beck, Dave Lemke and Aurora Florence into the band to bring in a guitarist, bassist and pianist for the group. The band name refers to a statement Reynolds gave to each member. The quintet was released in the same year as their first title, Speak to Me . Beck and Florence left the band later that year.

In 2009, Tolman's high school boyfriend Wayne Sermon, who was just graduating from Berklee College of Music in guitar playing at the time, joined the band. Lemke left the band shortly afterwards and Sermon took his position in the band, whereupon he brought the music student Ben McKee into the group as the new bass player. In their hometown of Provo, they built a small band before the members moved to Las Vegas, the hometown of Daniel Reynolds, where the band recorded and released their first three songs.

2010 to 2013: breakthrough with "Night Visions"

With the release of their EP Hell and Silence 2010, the band received a contract from Interscope Records , which could increase the popularity of the band. She then recorded the EP Continued Silence with producer Alex Da Kid at Westlake Recording Studios , which was released in 2012 and made its first impression on the US charts.

With the song It's Time , which was released in early 2012, they were able to gain greater attention for the first time outside of their homeland; they reached the official single charts of over 20 countries and sold over 2.5 million copies. The song was also nominated for an MTV Music Award . Two months later, the second single from their debut album Radioactive was released , which solidified their worldwide breakthrough. The song reached the top 5 positions in many countries and was a number one hit in Sweden . In the popular video for Radioactive , in addition to Alexandra Daddario , the American actor Lou Diamond Phillips can be seen in a prominent guest role as a betting baron. The video on YouTube has had over a billion views so far. Directed by Syndrome .

The group's debut album called Night Visions followed in autumn 2012 . This consisted of new productions as well as titles from previous EPs. It was able to confirm the success and reached the top 10 in many countries. Sales rose to over 7 million, for which the Imagine Dragons were awarded 20 platinum records. It topped the Scottish album charts, and it became the most streamed album of 2013 in the US.

After the release of their studio album, the band released the songs Demons and On Top of the World . Both brought further worldwide success. Demons is a quieter song that follows the pattern of a ballad and achieved record status in 11 countries. In the US alone, the single sold 5 million times. On Top of the World was particularly popular in airplay and could be heard in a number of advertising and feature films; He was part of the promotional campaign for Coca-Cola and the NBA 2013/14 broadcast, but also the films The Croods and Angry Birds - The Movie .

In 2013 the Imagine Dragons won the American Music Award (AMA) in the “Best Alternative Artists” category . Radioactive was named Best Rock Performance of the Year at the Grammy Awards . On September 19, 2013, the band released the song Monster as part of the action role game Infinity Blade III , which appeared on the deluxe version of the two years later released album Smoke + Mirrors .

2014 to 2016: Second studio album "Smoke + Mirrors"

The Imagine Dragons live at the Sziget Festival 2014

On June 2, 2014, Imagine Dragons released Battle Cry, the theme song of the Michael Bay blockbuster Transformers: Era of Doom , which is also melodically themed in the film's soundtrack. By producing the official title track, Linkin Park did not get involved, as in the previous parts .

To coincide with the World Championship of the League of Legends computer game , Imagine Dragons and the game's developer released the song Warriors on September 17, 2014 , which served as the title song of the competition and which the band performed before the final in Seoul . The song also acts as the official anthem of the 2015 Women's World Cup and was included in the soundtrack of the movie The Determination - Insurgent . Like Monster , the title was found on the deluxe version of their second studio album Smoke + Mirrors .

In October 2014 the song I Bet My Life was released as the lead single of their upcoming album. This thematizes the relationship between frontman Dan Reynolds and his parents. They premiered the song at the American Music Awards , where they were named "Favorite Alternative Artist". The track advanced to the official singles charts in all relevant countries and was awarded a platinum record for one million sales in the USA.

In January 2015, the band released the second single from the album called Shots . They presented them live at the Grammy Awards of the same year. The title reached the official singles charts in over 10 countries and developed into a commercial success, especially in Norway, for which an official remix by the DJ duo Broiler was mainly responsible. On February 13, 2015, their second studio album, Smoke + Mirrors, was released . This moved to the top of the British and US album charts. In both countries, as well as in Austria, the album was awarded a gold record.

In August 2015, the Imagine Dragons released Dream, the last single from the album. However, the release only took place in the USA in the form of a remix by Future Bass producer Jorgen Odegard. Later in 2015, the Imagine Dragons released two non-album singles Roots and I Was Me , which commercially couldn't keep up with their previous singles. The latter song acts as a charity single and stands out from its actual style. This corresponds to a much quieter and more acoustic design.

On June 24, 2016, Imagine Dragons published the song Sucker for Pain on their Facebook page , which they recorded with Lil Wayne , Wiz Khalifa , Logic , Ty Dolla $ ign and X Ambassadors . The song is part of the soundtrack of the film Suicide Squad and forms the second top 10 position in the German single charts.

2017: Third studio album: "Evolve"

On September 27, 2016, Imagine Dragons first tweeted her third studio album. It read Studio . The band continued by posting cryptic messages on their Twitter account. On January 28, 2017, the band began uploading a series of videos. These pointed to the lead single of the album. The time-lapse videos show singer Dan Reynolds drawing surreal images on a graphics tablet . Morse codes were hidden in it, which could be translated as "objects of the same color".

The song Believer was released on February 1, 2017 . The accompanying video was released a month later on March 7, 2017. The song was played in the Super Bowl commercial on the Nintendo Switch .

The second single from their upcoming studio album followed in April 2017. The song is called Thunder and is quieter than its predecessor. The track became a top 10 hit in over 19 countries.

Parallel to the announcement of their third studio album Evolve , Whatever It Takes, a promo single was decoupled from the studio album. This was made available for download on May 9, 2017 when the album was made available for pre-order. The single quickly entered the official single charts in Austria and the USA, among others. Walking the Wire was released as a second promo single on June 15, 2017 . It could be downloaded as soon as you order a product from their online shop.

Since 2018: fourth studio album "Origins"

On June 15, 2018, in collaboration with the Norwegian DJ and producer Kygo, they released the song Born to Be Yours , which stylistically fell into the field of tropical house, which was the first time they moved away from alternative rock. The song became a commercial success in Europe and achieved platinum status in Poland and Switzerland, among others. This was followed on July 17, 2018 by the single Natural , which was selected by the American television station ESPN as the theme music for the broadcast of college football . It achieved top 10 positions in Austria, Belgium and the Czech Republic. It also moved up to the top of various American rock and alternative charts.

The song Zero was released on September 21, 2018 . It was already revealed in the second trailer of the music video that it would be part of the Walt Disney animation film Ralph Breaks the Internet (Chaos on the Net) . The official music video, which shows the band members in various arcade games , as well as the lyric video that is played entirely on the Internet, played on this. One day after the release, they performed the song at the iHeartRadio Music Festival. They later put it on Jimmy Kimmel Live! or the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.

On October 2, 2018, the official cover and merchandise of their fourth studio album was leaked and appeared on the Internet. Natural and Zero were the first to emerge from the album. The following day it was officially announced by the band with a documentation about the background. In this they gave the reasons why a studio album will be released again after such a short time and with the end of the "Evolve World Tour" in September 2018. Reynolds said that although bands are actually taking a little break after an album release and major tour, they already had a lot of finished songs on hold that would have been ready for production. Since they wanted to take a new direction after the release, they decided to complete Origin .

On October 31, 2018, the Imagine Dragons released the song Machine as their third single. Just a week later, Bad Liar was released as the fourth and final single. This developed into a worldwide success and was able to advance into the top 10 in several countries. The official music video shows the dancer Autumn Miller doing a choreography for the song. The song was also performed for the first time at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.

On January 7, 2019, they appeared on the half-time break of the College Football Playoff National Championship Games . There, in addition to Natural , Bad Liar, they also performed a remix version of the song Believer , which was created in collaboration with the American rapper Lil Wayne . This was published the following day on various streaming platforms.

In collaboration with the Swedish producer Avicii , a new version of his instrumental piece Heart Upon My Sleeve was created , which could be found on the studio album True . After this version was never completed, the Imagine Dragons completed the song for the posthumous studio album Tim after Avicii's sudden death in April 2018 .

Together with the Italian singer Elisa , the band re-recorded the song Birds from their studio album Origins . At the same time as the Origins Deluxe Edition was released, the new recording was released as the fifth and final single.

style

The band's music is described as being radio friendly, with influences from hip-hop , folk and pop being audible. The band says themselves that they don't divide themselves into any musical genre. Therefore, there is great disagreement, which is why rock , as well as indie rock , alternative or alternative rock is usually spoken of.
