stage name

Kygo logo

The pronunciation of his pseudonym "Kygo" is used in both Norwegian ( kyːɡuː ) and English ( kaɪɡoʊ ).

The idea for his artist name came from the username he used for a digital learning platform at school. Here he formed a syllable word from his name by making his first name “Kyrre” “Ky-” and his last name “Gørvell-Dahll” “-go”.

In an interview with the magazine “Fanaposten” he said: “Kygo [is] absolutely perfect as an artist name. It is very easy to pronounce in both Norwegian and English. And I don't need to change the stage name [in the future]. "

biography

Until 2014: musical beginnings

Kygo began playing the piano at the age of six and took lessons on the instrument for ten years. At the age of 19 he began to produce his own electronic music . He first got more attention in 2013 for his unauthorized mixes (bootlegs) that he published on his SoundCloud page, including songs by Rihanna , Passenger and Ellie Goulding . With the remix of the classic Sexual Healing by Marvin Gaye , it reached 10 million views. A remix of Ed Sheeran's hit film I See Fire , for which there is also a YouTube video, even reached over 60 million views on YouTube alone. None of these productions was discussed with the authors. Peculiarity of his music are the slower beats (100 instead of at House usual 120 or more beats per minute ) and the Steel drum and flute sound, used to describe Tropical House led.

At the end of 2013 he made a remix for the new Swedish discovery Seinabo Sey . The soul pop singer also had a streaming hit on Spotify in Sweden and a number one hit in the Norwegian charts thanks to his version . Kygo's remix of Cut Your Teeth by British musician Kyla La Grange was also an Internet hit in the summer of 2014 and was subsequently released as an official remix. In the Hype Machine , a well-known blog for music trends, it was voted number one ten times within a short period of time. It also made headlines that Coldplay commissioned the Norwegian with a remix for their song Midnight .

2014 to 2016: Musical breakthrough & Cloud Nine

Kygo at Tomorrowland 2014

Throughout the year Kygo toured the USA and appeared at numerous festivals. At TomorrowWorld he was booked to replace Avicii , who could not appear due to health problems. The big record labels also showed great interest and offered him contracts. He signed with Ultra Records and major label Sony Music in July and began producing his first own song for an official release. Firestone , a collaboration with Australian singer Conrad Sewell . The track was released as a single in early December 2014 and immediately rose to number one in its home country of Norway and also climbed into the top 10 in other European countries. The song also entered the top 100 of the US singles charts and achieved gold status for over half a million sales. The official music video reached over 600 million views on YouTube.

In March 2015, his second own single, Stole the Show, followed with the US R&B singer Parson James , with which he topped the Norwegian and, for the first time, the Swedish chart and reached over 220 million views on YouTube. The song also reached the top 10 in other European countries and achieved gold status in the USA.

His third solo single Nothing Left , which was recorded together with the British singer Will Heard, reached the top of the Dutch singles charts. After a few more pre-single releases with Ella Henderson and Labrinth , among others , his debut album Cloud Nine followed on May 13, 2016 . This reached the top 10 of over 15 countries, including number one in Norway, the Czech Republic and Switzerland. Carry Me was released in collaboration with Julia Michaels as the last single from the album, but this could not follow the success of the predecessor. They performed the song together at the closing ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics in the Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro .

On August 17, 2016, his own collection "Kygo Life" was released.

One of the authors was in contact with Selena Gomez , who sang the song after a vocal session with Tamposi. At a joint studio session between the two main interpreters, actor Vin Diesel was also on site, who also gave the song his voice for fun. This version ended up on the internet. It Ain't Me was given high potential in advance. After publication, the song moved to number three in the German and Austrian, number nine in the British and eleventh place in the US singles charts. In addition, the title jumped to the top of the Norwegian and Croatian singles charts.

The track was released as a single the day before the EP was released and was able to surpass the success of its predecessor. The single was sold over half a million times and the song reached a top 10 position in various countries. Also This Town could advance through downloads from the EP in several countries in the single charts.

On October 19, 2017, Kygo announced on its social media channels that its upcoming studio album would be titled Kids in Love and announced the release date. Talking about the inspiration behind the album's title, he said:

““ To be a child in love describes being super passionate about someone or something and I've been playing the piano very passionately since I was six years old. When I play a song or a melody that I really like, I feel like a boy in love. ""
