The Zurich Openair is a music festival near Zurich Airport on the grounds of the municipalities of Rümlang and Opfikon . It has taken place annually from 2010 to 2018, with the exception of 2011.
The musical spectrum includes indie , electro and rock music and includes a mixture of internationally known musicians, bands and newcomers.
The festival area covers around 95,000 square meters and offers a campsite for 3,000 tents. The event counted around 80,000 visitors over four days of the festival in 2017.
history
From August 27 to 29, 2010, the Zurich Openair took place as a three-day open air festival under the motto “Festival Excess, City Access” and was the first Swiss festival to be presented by the music broadcaster MTV .
Due to soil damage, the festival organizers decided to take a break in 2011 to prepare the site for the 2012 event.
In 2012 the Zurich Openair took place from 23 to 26 August 2012 over four days with a restructured festival site and a revised logistics and infrastructure concept. International DJs performed on the new “Dance Circus” tent stage . The final concert was played by Die Fantastischen Vier with an unplugged performance.
The daily 20 Minuten then commented: “In terms of music, the audience was offered almost nothing but top class: Whether it was Skrillex, Kraftwerk, Lykke Li, Boy, Tocotronic or Bloc Party - the audience was enthusiastic about what was happening on stage. And for an outdoor event, the sound quality was top notch. "
The exchange of cash for festival money caused criticism, as there were long queues in front of the exchange booths.
The third edition of the Zürich Openair from August 29 to September 1, 2013 was also successful for the first time in fine weather and was once again a festival for everyone who loves rock, indie and electro. Highlights were Nine Inch Nails , Arctic Monkeys , The xx , Die Ärzte , Ellie Goulding and many more.
The fourth Zurich Openair took place in Glattbrugg on August 28th to 31st. Headliners were Deadmau5 , Paolo Nutini and Röyksopp & Robyn , who performed their Do It Again tour in 2014. Due to the unsteady weather and a less commercial line-up than last year, the number of visitors has decreased somewhat. Nevertheless, the 2014 Zurich Openair ended with a positive balance.
The fifth edition of the ZÜRICH OPENAIR came to an end after four days. The program with bands like The Libertines , Alt-J , Tame Impala , Seeed , Kasabian or superstars of the electronic ranks like Paul Kalkbrenner , Skrillex or Fatboy Slim as well as the dream weather attracted over 60,000 music enthusiasts to Rümlang. The new cashless system worked perfectly after the first minor teething problems could be cured on the first evening.
The 2017 edition of the Zürich Openair, which took place from August 23rd to 26th, took place with international headliners such as Mumford & Sons , Major Lazer , The Prodigy , Kygo and The xx and a record attendance of almost 80,000 people. On Saturday, the organizers counted 25,757 visitors during Parov Stelar's season .
