Richie Hawtin
Richie Hawtin (actually Richard Hawtin , * 4. June 1970 in Banbury , Oxfordshire , England ) is a DJ , musician and techno - producer , of this genre has influenced prevail. He has published numerous pseudonyms his records, including Plastikman and FUSE As an innovator, he is also in the discipline of DJ Mixing, which he expanded through the use of technical aids to greater variation possibilities of music, than is possible at the mere intermixing of individual plates .
Life
1981 emigrated Hawtin parents from England to Windsor ( Ontario ). His father worked in a car factory belonging to the General Motors concern. At the age of 15, Richie Hawtin made regular "clubbing" trips to nearby Detroit , and at 17 he was already a disc jockey at a club called Shelter . Together with his brother Matthew Hawtin (a visual artist) he shared an old fire station in Windsor at the time. Richie Hawtin began studying film in Windsor. Through a contact with Jeff Mills , Hawtin first worked as a producer in the late 1980s. He then had his own radio show on Detroit 96.3 FM , which contributed to his continued popularity. With John Acquaviva he founded the 1990 Plus 8 - label . Originally, the producer duo wanted to publish HipHop and so they initially produced for Kenny Larkin . Back in 1991, first appeared Acid Techno on the label, usually by Hawtin, Acquaviva and Speedy J recorded. Within a very short time constant sales of 10,000 pieces and more were achieved. Hawtin founded the labels Probe (for more experimental releases) and "Definitive" (for house music ) in 1991 . At the same time he, Acquaviva and Speedy J were in international demand as DJs and live acts. Due to his numerous commitments, Hawtin finished his studies without a degree.
As a musician and DJ, Hawtin now called himself Plastikman and Fuse , and together with Fred Giannelli and Daniel Bell also Spawn . Releases (mostly maxi singles) followed in large numbers and in quick succession. In addition to his own productions, Hawtin also made a name for himself as a remixer. He has worked for Sven Väth , The Shamen , Josh Wink , Laibach , Steve Hillage and with Pete Namlook , among others .
On his album "Sheet One" (1993) he interwoven acid with ambient and minimal techno elements. The songs are experimental sound collages made up of TB-303 runs , percussions and effects. In 1995, Hawtin's “Call it what you want” was the 50th publication on Plus8 Rec. In 1995 Hawtin and his brother Matthew founded a distribution called Intellinet for a total of 15 labels, which was soon discontinued. As a result of the Intellinet bankruptcy, the labels Probe and Definitive were also discontinued. In 1997, after more than 70 publications, Plus8 was discontinued . The label subsequently operated under the name m_nus .
Richie Hawtin is more of a live act than a classic DJ, he often uses additional effects devices and not infrequently he also connects a TR 909 drum computer. One such session was recorded on CD in 1999 : “Decks, EFX & 909”. Together with John Acquaviva, he was the first DJ to use the Final Scratch software for mixing.
In 2000, “Plus8 Classics” was a retrospective on seven years of label activity. With “DE9: Closer to the Edit” he presented an album in 2001 that was put together from countless small sound snippets from over 100 techno productions, half an in-house production and half a DJ mix. From 2002 to 2003 Hawtin lived in New York City , then briefly in Berlin . In Germany, an intensive collaboration began with Ricardo Villalobos , with whom he formed a DJ team and in whose project Narodniki - the Laptop Supergroup he also worked. In the second half of 2005, Hawtin and the Milanese choreographer Enzo Cosimi created the title “9:20” for the opening gala of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. It was, however, an extended version of the piece "Substance Abuse" published in 1991 under his project name FUSE. In March 2006, the exhibition min2max was on view in Berlin , in which, according to the press release, “ the cuboid is mystified in space with an aesthetic minimalism ”. The exhibition concept was provided by Matthew Hawtin , and Richie Hawtin produced the minimalist soundtrack for it.
