Kenny Larkin (* 1968 in Detroit ) is an American techno producer and DJ . Today he is counted among the second wave of Detroit techno producers and made a decisive contribution to the establishment of the intelligent techno genre in the mid-1990s with his rather unconventional releases .
Life
During his school days Larkin got to know the emerging techno scene in Detroit through his school friend Terrence Parker . However, his own musical career did not begin until 1990 after serving in the United States Air Force between 1986 and 1988 . He returned to his native Detroit, where he wanted to work as a stand-up comedian . In 1989 he met Richie Hawtin . Larkin bought his first synthesizer, a Yamaha DX 7, and produced his own techno pieces.
Larkin then released his first singles on Hawtin's Plus 8 label . After publications on Derrick May's label Transmat , Larkin moved to the British electronica label Warp Records , on which his first album Azimuth was released in 1994 . Singles and albums on R&S , KMS and Peacefrog followed in the years to come .
On November 17, 1994, Larkin was gunned down by two strangers in Detroit. After a twelve-hour operation, his life was saved. In the late 1990s, Larkin withdrew from the techno scene and did not produce any more pieces. He moved to Los Angeles and turned back to stand-up comedy.
It wasn't until 2004 that a new album was released with The Narcissist , which was soon followed by other singles and EPs. He currently works as a resident DJ at the Laugh Factory Club in Los Angeles.
