R&S Records is a record label founded in 1984 that was one of the most important record labels in this field with numerous publications in the field of electronic music in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

history

Renaat Vandepapeliere (2012)

The name of the label, originally based in Ghent , Belgium , is derived from the initials of the founders, the musician Renaat Vandepapeliere and his partner Sabine Maes. The label was initially founded as Milos Music Belgium . However, only one single by the artist Big Tony was released under this name . Vandepapeliere originally wanted to name the label Ferrari Records, but his partner convinced him of the name R&S. However, the logo, a rearing horse, was adopted from the Italian luxury car brand.

Big Tony's cover version of the Barry White classic Can't Get Enough (Of Your Love) was released as the first single under the imprint of R&S .

From 1988 onwards, R&S released a number of singles, some of which are now classics of New Beat and Techno .

  • 1988: Spectrum - Total Recall (RS 880013)
  • 1990: CJ Bolland - The Ravesignal (RS 912)
  • 1990: Joey Beltram - Beltram Vol. 1 (with the hit Energy Flash ) (RS 926)

  • 1991: Second Phase - Mentasm (RS 9109)
  • 1991: Outlander - Vamp (RS 9116)
  • 1991: Voodoo Child - Voodoo Child (RS 9122)
  • 1992: Aphex Twin - Digeridoo (RS 92001)
  • 1992: Jaydee - Plastic Dreams (RS 92027)
  • 1992: DJ Hell - My Definition Of House Music (RS 92020)
  • 1992: Jam & Spoon - Stella (RS 92708)
  • 1995: Ken Ishii - Extra (RS 95064)
  • 1995: Model 500 - The Flow (RS 95070)

The biggest chart hit was Jaydees Plastic Dreams , of which R&S was able to sell more than 500,000 units in the following years. During this time, the label founder Renaat Vandepapeliere continued to discover and support numerous young talents such as CJ Bolland, Moby, Joey Beltram or Aphex Twin, who later were among the most successful artists on the techno scene. In addition, Classics has published earlier productions by Model 500 (1993), Aphex Twin (1995) and Dave Angel (1996). Another flagship was the compilation series In Order To Dance , of which six parts were released. From the mid-1990s onwards, productions by drum and bass artists such as Lemon D , Wax Doctor and Jacob's Optical Stairway increased .

As a result, however, there were no more hits and the pioneering role that R&S had in earlier years was taken over by other labels. After a few years in which it remained rather quiet about R&S, a new beginning under the motto "Mission 2" was announced on the label's website in March 2006.

The actual relaunch of the label only followed in 2008 by the musician Dan Foat and the label manager Andy Whitaker, who have been running the label from London ever since . Since then, mainly British artists such as James Blake , Space Dimension Controller and Lone have published on R&S .
