Renaat Vandepapeliere (born June 21, 1957 in Deinze , East Flanders Province ) is a Belgian label operator , music producer and DJ . He was best known as the founder of the record label R&S Records . He is considered a pioneer of the Belgian new beat and techno scene .

Life

Vandepapeliere, who comes from a family with nine children, was born in Deinze in 1957.

He discovered his passion for music at an early age. At first he played as a drummer in a band. After finishing school he began to study linguistics. After a conflict with his father, he had to drop out of college. He opened a hairdressing salon and was able to invest in a club with his salary , where he also appeared as a DJ for the first time . However, the club went broke after a while, so that Vandepapeliere lost all of his money. He then worked for six years in a record store and performed as a DJ at the same time. At that time he met a young Yugoslav who was studying in Ghent and who owned a music studio in Germany. This gave him the impetus to get started in music production.

In 1984 he founded the label R&S Records (Renaat & Sabine) with his partner Sabine Maes . The first release under this imprint was Big Tony's cover version of the Barry White classic Can't Get Enough (Of Your Love) . Vandepapeliere also produced many of the publications, including Big Tony, Space Opera, Spectrum and Digital Vamp. From 1988 onwards, R&S released a number of singles, some of which are now classics of New Beat and Techno . The label's biggest chart hit was Jaydees Plastic Dreams , of which R&S was able to sell more than 500,000 units in the following years. During this time, Vandepapeliere discovered and promoted numerous young talents such as CJ Bolland , Moby , Joey Beltram or Aphex Twin , who later were among the most successful artists on the techno scene.

In 1992, Vandepapeliere and Maes founded Apollo, an R&S sub-label that mainly featured ambient releases by artists such as Sun Electric and Biosphere .

In the mid-1990s, R&S was increasingly forgotten and was finally discontinued in 2001. After that, Vandepapeliere devoted himself to breeding horses for a few years . R&S has been led by the musician Dan Foat and the label manager Andy Whitaker from London since 2008 . Vandepapeliere continues to be the label's president.
