Protea Hotels by Marriott (until June 14, 2016 Protea Hotels ) is the largest hotel chain in Africa. It is based in Cape Town , South Africa .

The hotel group markets and operates (as of November 2018) 77 hotels with more than 8,000 rooms in nine African countries under the names Protea Hotels , Protea Hotels Fire & Ice and African Pride Hotels . Seven more hotels with 751 rooms are planned, including in Botswana . The hotels are (as of November 2018) in Algeria , Ghana , Malawi , Namibia , Nigeria , Zambia , South Africa , Tanzania and Uganda .

In 2015, more than half of the hotels, but only around a third of the total rooms, were operated as franchises .

history

The company was founded on July 1, 1984 by Otto Stehlik of German origin . Initially, four hotels were operated. After the company expanded, 53 percent went to Black Economic Empowerment Partners by 2005 . On July 1, 2007, the majority of the company went to the Australian Stella . Exactly two years later, the 74 percent was bought back.

Protea Hotels has been part of Marriott International since April 1, 2014 .
