New beat

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

New Beat is a music style in the electronics / house area, which takes up elements of different genres such as EBM , Hi-NRG or Acid House and combines them with one another. The style originated in Belgium in 1987 and was considered a parallel movement to the European acid house wave. New beat subgenres are hard beat and sketchzo (schizzo).

background

According to legend, New Beat was invented by Carlos Perón, and allegedly by the Belgian DJ Marc Grouls , when he accidentally played the 1986 single "Flesh" by the Belgian synth rock and EBM formation A Split Second at 33 instead of 45 rpm. However, Carlos Perón's album Nothing is true; Everything is permitted from 1983 at the time available at speeds of 45 rpm and 33 rpm through Milan Disques / Polygram. The DJs in Belgium played it permanently at 33 rpm, which ultimately led to the new beat in the clubs. Furthermore, the Yello founder was ahead of his time. The deliberately slower playing of 45s singles and maxi singles quickly spread in the Belgian club scene and the clumsy new beat became a counter-trend to the acid house wave, which was already popular at the time , but which then quickly survived.

According to the protagonists at the time, New Beat was expressly not influenced by American Detroit techno or Chicago house . Rather, New Beat met the taste of the Belgian underground club scene, where music projects like Front 242 and The Neon Judgment had been successful for some time. In 1987 the November issue of Spex magazine published a first German article on the Belgian EBM and new beat scene.

The style influenced the techno and house scene in Europe in the early 1990s . The Euro Dance , and also the Hardcore Techno have their roots in the different expressions of the New Beat. Some new beat producers integrated rap passages into their tracks (whereby the lines between new beat and hip house were blurred), others used hard and aggressive sounding synthesizer sounds.
