Chicago House
Chicago House (sometimes also called Classic House ) is the original form of today's house music .
history
In the late 1970s put the DJ Frankie Knuckles disco classics - especially popular plates at that time were the New York Salsoul - labels - and Euro-imports in the Chicago scene Club Warehouse on. At that time, the commercial sell-out of disco was all but over and disco music was returning to its underground origins. The warehouse , which opened in 1977, was one of the few clubs in Chicago at the time. It was a shabby gay club, but it had a good sound system. When Frankie Knuckles got bored with playing ordinary disco music , he began to mix it with soul - primarily Philly soul -, P-funk and electronic music from Europe such as Kraftwerk to create imaginative and sprawling collages. From now on, more and more black DJ, soul and began radio pieces with plant-infected dance beats refresh.
In the record stores, the audience soon spoke only of "that sound they play down the house" (in German: "the sound that is played down in the house"). So the new music finally got its name and the original house was developed.
The development of the Chicago House was now particularly characterized by technical innovations based on simple bass lines and a "four-to-the-floor" rhythm. The frequently used piano loops are extremely characteristic. The "DJ Association" Hot Mix 5 was founded in 1981, from which in 1987 a label of the same name emerged.
From the beginning, the Chicago producer and label landscape was marked by envy and resentment. This was carried out particularly strongly by the most famous labels DJ International and Trax Records . So the record Hey Rocky! Came on Trax Records . by Boris Badenough, which was considered the diss of Rocky Jones , the founder and then owner of DJ International. The record was mixed by Frankie Knuckles, who in turn also got a bad reputation after he sold various pieces that he recorded with Jamie Principle behind his back to Trax Records and DJ International. Jamie then recorded the track Knucklehead , and Frankie Knuckles left Chicago.
In addition, pieces by producers were sold to DJs so that they could publish them on their behalf and thus get popular DJ bookings. The Chicago scene was initially able to see that it was possible to earn a lot of money with "Dj Jobs", especially in Europe, from the example of Marshall Jefferson , who was not a DJ but had to be booked by an English club. He initially made it clear to them that he wasn't a DJ, but after being offered £ 1000 he quickly changed his mind and became a DJ.
Right from the start there was a distinction between “tracks” and “songs” at Chicago House. "Tracks" were the rawer, mostly rhythmically-based pieces such as Time To Jack by Chip E. Songs, on the other hand, were the pieces whose structure is based on classic songwriting, such as Love Can't Turn Around by Farley " Jackmaster "Funk & Jesse Saunders.
When new styles of house emerged towards the end of the 1980s - such as deep house , garage house or acid house - people soon spoke only of house music. The term Chicago House is still used today to distinguish the original house style from more recent developments.
