Life

As operator of the Metroplex label , Kevin Saunderson and Jeff Mills refer to him as the godfather of Detroit techno . His piece “No UFOs”, published in 1985, is widely referred to as the first techno record ever.

Although he never had the commercial success such. B. Kevin Saunderson , but he has always stuck uncompromisingly to his innovative ideals of electronic music : His music sounds futuristic , often minimal.

The Kraftwerk fan went to Belleville High School with Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson and began producing electronic music with simple equipment in the late 1970s . He founds Cybotron with Richard Davis alias 3070 . They sell 15,000 copies of the first maxi, but dissolve again after the first album . Other Atkins pseudonyms were e.g. B. Infiniti and Model 500 . Today Atkins works in different music genres, he also produces slower pieces with soul influences (like on his album Mind and Body ).

With the piece No UFOs , the automaker Ford advertised the launch of its Focus model in 2000. The particular relevance here is the deliberate bridging of two Detroit veterans.

In January 2006, Atkins was nominated for a Grammy as a songwriter for Missy Elliott's song Loose Control . The track is based on the track Clear (1982, remixed by Jose "Animal" Diaz) by Cybotron.
