Intelligent dance music
Intelligent Dance Music ( IDM ) is a genre name in electronic music. The term is relatively fuzzy and does not stand for a single genre, but for different styles of electronic music. IDM can roughly be described as the intersection of different influences such as techno , breakbeat , drum and bass , industrial , ambient , clicks & cuts , indietronica and musique concrète . Characteristics of the music are the exploration and use of unusual sounds, e.g. by means of overdriven modulation frequencies with sound effects such as flanger , vibrato , glitch or distortion as well as rhythmic and melodic complexity.

The term was first used in the 1990s, especially in the English-speaking world, to classify innovative electronic music. The term is primarily intended to indicate that intelligence is required of the listener , which means that the music is difficult to access by normal pop music standards.
However, the term is not without controversy as it directly implies that other varieties of electronic dance music are intended for less intelligent audiences. The opposite position to this thesis is that other types of electronic music are undoubtedly less complex music and the term IDM refers to the producers and not to the audience. The classification as dance music is intended to indicate the electronic production method, but it seems largely unsuitable, since " dancing " in the conventional sense is usually not possible and is often not intended as the main purpose of the music. For these reasons it has been increasingly replaced by the term electronica - as a collective term for innovative electronic music.

The development of IDM was largely on the British label Warp Records influenced, particularly with her as Artificial Intelligence designated compilation series genre made known to a wider public.
