Rephlex Records was a record label for electronic music founded in 1991 by musician Richard D. James ( Aphex Twin ) and Grant Wilson-Claridge , which existed until 2014.

history

James and Wilson-Claridge both worked as DJs at The Bowgie club near Newquay in Cornwall from 1989 . Together they made the decision to first publish their own music as records for their friends James. After James had first national successes as Aphex Twin with his releases Didgeridoo and the Xylem Tube EP on other labels such as R&S Records , the label moved to London in 1992 . With his next releases on Warp Records , James established his fame as a pioneer of Intelligent Dance Music (IDM). His commercial breakthrough as a musician also ensured an unexpected surge in popularity for the small label he ran.

In the following years, in addition to James' own publications as AFX or Caustic Window, numerous style-defining works by artists such as the Drill'n'Bass musicians Thomas Jenkinson ( Squarepusher , Chaos AD ) and Luke Vibert ( Amen Andrews , Vibert / Simmonds ) appeared on Rephlex Records. , the electro-synthpop pioneer Ed Upton ( DMX Krew ), the easy-listening band The Gentle People and the German bitpop group Bodenständig 2000 . Rephlex also released some remastered re-releases of early works by Acid House and IDM bands 808 State and The Future Sound of London .

The style term "Braindance" was coined to describe the mostly difficult to categorize publications. Rephlex Records' own definition of "braindance" is:

Braindance is the genre that encompasses the best elements of all genres, eg traditional, classical, electronic music, popular, modern, industrial, ambient, hip hop, electro, house, techno, breakbeat, hardcore, ragga, garage, drum and bass , etc. ".

The label's release policy was otherwise not particularly stringent. According to James, the operators found long-term contracts "silly". Some artists only released an album or two before switching to other labels. Other records were announced for years before they finally came out. More than 200 albums, EPs and singles have been released since it was founded .

According to James, the label was given up in 2014.
