Venetian Snares is the stage name of Aaron Funk (born January 11, 1975 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ), an electronic music producer from Winnipeg ( Canada ).

music

Most of the music belongs to the breakcore genre , with extremely high tempos, breakbeats , unusual sounds and a large number of samples being used. A specialty of Funk's publications is the massive use of unusual time signature (especially 7/4 time or 7/8 time), extremely rarely you will find a 4/4 time. His playful handling of snare drums is also typical, some of which he uses like a melody-leading instrument, which is also where his artist name can be traced back.

Venetian Snares' musical releases cover a wide variety of genres and styles. While albums such as Winnipeg Is a Frozen Shithole and Cavalcade of Glee and Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pom Poms clearly show the genre - typical hardcore techno and gabber influences, the albums Rossz Csillag Alatt Született and My Downfall (original soundtrack) mostly elements of classical music can be heard in connection with the Amen Break . According to his own statement, Funk learned to play the violin for Rossz Csillag Alatt Született , and sampled strings from compositions by Igor Stravinsky , Béla Bartók and others can be heard. On the albums Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding or Songs About My Cats , Funk uses very technical sounds that move in the direction of IDM / Glitch . On the album Higgins Ultra Low Track Glue Funk Hits 1972-2006 he drives the sample density on an unimagined height, by for example, from pop culture known songs like Britney Spears ' I'm A Slave 4 U , Heat Waves Boogie Nights or Mötley Crües Too Young completely new, alienated-sounding songs assembled. Still other releases like Badminton or Moonglow / This Bitter Earth show a strong jazz influence . Nymphomatriarch from 2003 was created in collaboration with his girlfriend at the time, the breakcore musician Hecate . According to his own statement, the entire album consists of samples that both recorded during intercourse . Instead of a snare drum, clapping one hand on the buttocks ( spanking ) is used.

Funk's music has been appearing mainly on Mike Paradinas '(µ-ziq) label Planet Mu since 2001 , which immediately signed him for the label after hearing Greg Hates' Car Culture . But Funk also releases on other labels such as Hymen Records, Sublight Records, Zhark International and Isolate Records.

For the most part he uses tracker software for the composition , initially OctaMED , now Renoise and Cubase .

Some of the Venetian Snares record covers are by artist Trevor Brown and feature bizarre and shocking depictions of violence and sexuality. Other of his albums, on the other hand, are adorned with simple, almost banal images, for example of birds ( Rossz Csillag Alatt Született ), toys ( 2370894 ) or his cats ( Songs About My Cats ).

Like many other electronic music artists, Aaron Funk does not only publish his music under a pseudonym. Among other things, he has released songs on various samplers or side projects (such as his releases, which are strongly in the direction of acid, as Last Step ) under his real name or artist names such as Last Step , BeeSnares , Puff , Snares Man! , Ventriloquist Snakes , Senetian Vnares or Nymphomatriarch (along with Hecate).

Funk lived in Budapest with his Bulgarian girlfriend for a while . After the split, he moved back to Winnipeg.

In 2010 Funk founded his own label Timesig, on which he released the album My So-Called Life .
