Renoise is a commercial digital audio workstation (DAW) based on the tracker principle , in which the music is notated textually in a grid with the dimensions time and soundtrack. The sound tracks can be used to play audio samples and control plugin-based instruments and effects. Renoise supports the VST , Audio Unit and LADSPA plug-in standards common in the professional sector .
history
origin
Renoise was and is for the most part programmed and improved by demosceners . Renoise is a further development of the Noisetrekker by the Spanish programmer Juan Antonio Arguelles Rius aka "Arguru". The tracker, at that time still without a name, was initiated by Eduard Müller (tactics) and Zvonko Tesic (Phazze) in December 2000. In spring 2002 stable versions became available and in the following years the development team continued to grow with specialists for testing, administration, Support and webpage.
development
The first beta of Renoise 2 , a major release, came out on September 3rd, 2008 and introduced long-requested features that have long been used in professional digital audio workstations. These include u. a. Plug-in delay compensation, support of audio units, plug-in support with different output channels and a non-tickspeed-based time model. A new effects column has also been introduced to use events with a resolution of 1/256; Especially for live recording, this offers the possibility of much more accurate recording quality.
Renoise now also has a signal follower and cross-track routing . The signal follower detects level changes in the audio signal output stream of a track and uses these as control values for the automation of any device parameters.
Technical characteristics
Skills
Core features of Renoise:
- MIDI
- VST 2.0 plugins and instruments
- ASIO (full version only)
- ALSA (Linux)
- Jack (Linux)
- mixer
- An integrated high quality sampler (32 bit floating point ) with interpolation option
- Support of samples in WAV , AIFF , FLAC , Ogg and MP3 format
- Instrument editor with envelope editors (curve graphs) and any number of effect chains for convenient setting of all instruments
- Supplied DSP effects, which can be expanded with VST , AU and LADSPA plug-in effects
- Master and Send channels
- graphical automation for instruments, effects, VST effects and instruments, and MIDI (see below)
- In the full version - which is available for 68 EUR - Hi-Fi WAV renderer (32 bit, 96 kHz, 2 interpolation levels) for outputting the composition as a .wav file
- Import and playback of all common file formats
- Support for ReWire master and slave
Any parameters can be controlled via so-called "Automation Devices", e. B. Volume or cutoff frequency of a filter, but also every parameter of a VST instrument. There are u. a. the following modulation sources are available:
- LFO (curves: sine, sawtooth, triangle etc. or a curve drawn by yourself)
- Velocity and note value of the note played (Velocity Tracker & Key Tracker Device)
- Envelopes
- Level of any tracks (signal follower device)
Storage format
Renoise song files are saved as .rns and from version 1.8 in the XML -based format .xrns . .xrns is a new, free tracker module format .
Sound generation
As usual with trackers, Renoise has a built-in sampler. By using envelopes , filter effects and LFO functions, the composer can create a wide range of sounds from normal WAV samples. Renoise also has various internal effects such as delay , hall , reverb , distortion and pre- reverb , all of which can be routed to different tracks. Samples can be broken down into slices which, if they are short enough, allow them to be played back at other tempos without changing the pitch ( aka time stretching ). From version 3.2.0, Renoise can natively control time stretching, but not pitch shifting .
For sound reproduction under Windows , Renoise either uses the DirectSound interface or (if you have the full version) the ASIO interface. Linux users can switch between Jack and ALSA .
With the full version, the pieces of music can also be exported as WAV files, which means that they can be burned to CD or further processed, e.g. B. the mastering allows.
Expandability
With the release of Renoise 2.6.0, Lua scripting was introduced for the first time . The Renoise API makes it possible to program various extensions for Renoise in Lua and to automate processes.
The Renoise API enables a .:
- Create new context menu items and keyboard shortcuts
- Own graphical user elements that fit seamlessly into the Renoise user interface
- Manipulation of Renoise's own controls and full access to tracks, samples, instruments, mixers, etc.
The official Renoise website has an extensive section with extensions created by Renoise users.
Others
The Renoise makers work with the organizers of Evoke and Digitale Kultur e. V. work closely together and regularly sponsor their music competitions with several Renoise licenses.
One of the programmers at Renoise also programmed for Ableton . Some of the better known artists who use Renoise include Venetian Snares or Depeche Mode .
