FL Studio (formerly Fruity Loops ) is a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) from the Belgian company Image-Line Software . The program enables the composing of pieces of music using samples , software synthesizers and external MIDI devices, the recording and editing of sound material and the performance of pieces of music.

A restricted version for mobile devices with Apple iOS , Android and Windows 10 Mobile exists under the name FL Studio Mobile .

functionality

The FL Studio work area is divided into different windows .

In the playlist , sound tracks and audio files are organized and arranged as audio clips , MIDI data as pattern clips and automation curves as automation clips .

In the Channel Rack virtual instruments and related to MIDI traces managed. MIDI data can be recorded with the keyboard or with external MIDI devices. Editing and manual entry take place in the piano roll .

In the mixer , the sound sources assigned to the various channels are adjusted in terms of their volume and panorama position and provided with virtual effects such as an equalizer or a compressor .

The browser is used to search for files and drag and drop them into the various windows of the work area, manage projects and organize the plug-in database. Files can be entire project files (equivalent to manually loading a project), audio files, presets and plug-ins.

Virtual effects and instruments

FL Studio supports the integration of VST plug-ins which, as virtual effects, make it possible to change existing sound sources and to generate sounds as virtual instruments. Both the VST plug-ins included in the scope of delivery and those from independent third-party providers can be used.

In addition to the supplied virtual effect devices and synthesizers , the virtual sampler and the virtual drum computer can be used to modify audio files and embed them in the project.

Thanks to the ASIO capability, the instruments can be played with almost no latency (i.e. in real time, with no time delay) (assuming an ASIO-compatible sound card / driver combination).

Sales and product policy

FL Studio is sold as the functionally limited Fruity Edition and the full-fledged Producer Edition . In addition, you can purchase the Signature Bundle and have access to additional VST extensions.

Originally FL Studio could only be obtained via the Internet, but a boxed version is now also available from specialist retailers.

Updating FL Studio to newer versions is possible free of charge and without restrictions with the Lifetime Free Update .

development

Acted the software, developed by Didier Dambrin, in the first version 1.0 in 1997, even as a pure MIDI - drum machine , the functionality was soon to VST - and DirectX extended support. Later releases turned FL Studio into complex digital audio workstation software. The software was developed with the Delphi development environment . The current version is the 20.x series. Before FL Studio 20 was released, the macOS version was still in development. Since FL Studio 20, FL Studio is also officially available for macOS.

Vectorized user interface

The user interface of FL Studio is completely vectorized and scalable in discrete steps. FL Studio can thus be displayed on screens with a high image resolution or high point density with the same size without loss and in greater detail. Some of the supplied plug-ins and most of the third-party plug-ins are still based on raster graphics and therefore cannot be scaled without loss. Image-Line endeavors to completely vectorize the supplied plug-ins as well.

Users

FL Studio is used by many established producers , including Madeon , Brian Transeau , Basshunter , Martin Garrix , Avicii , Feed Me , Mike Oldfield , 9th Wonder , Afrojack and Louis Bell (producer of Post Malone, among others ).
