Record is a music software from the Swedish developer Propellerhead , which was released in 2009. However, it has been integrated into Reason since Reason version 6.

Concept and structure

With Record it is possible to create, arrange and mix audio recordings. Record is based on the structure and concept of Reason , which comes from the same developer. The structure is modular. The program window is divided into three areas: mixer, rack and sequencer. The rack can be filled with various modules such as amplifiers, filters and synthetic recording devices, which can be freely configured and combined. Recorded sound and MIDI tracks can be edited in the integrated sequencer. The program offers numerous functions for this, such as volume adjustment, editing or effects processing.

Integrated instruments and effects

Record offers a limited number of different software instruments and effect modules.

These include:

  • Combinator: With this device several instruments and effects can be combined in one module
  • : ID-8 Virtual Instrument, the drums , pianos , bass and string sounds includes
  • MClass Equalizer: A 4-band equalizer
  • MClass Stereo Imager: A 2-band stereo processor unit with which the highs and lows of a sound can be split and processed
  • MClass Compressor: A compressor
  • MClass Maximizer: A limiter that regulates the output level of an instrument down to a certain value
  • Line 6 Guitar Amp: Virtual version of a Line 6 guitar amplifier that can emulate three different amplifiers
  • Line 6 Bass Amp: Virtual version of a Line 6 bass amplifier that can emulate two different amplifiers
  • RV7000 Advanced Reverb: A reverb effects device
  • Scream 4 Distortion: A digital distortion effects device
  • DDL-1 Digital Delay Line: A small effects device for creating delay
  • CF-101 Chorus / Flanger: Contains chorus and flanger effects

Connection with Reason

An important aspect of the software is the ability to interface with Reason (version 4). Propellerhead is responding to the criticism that there is no audio recording in their software workstation. If the two programs are connected, both Record-internal and Reason-internal plug-ins can be used and audio and MIDI recordings can be mixed. It is still possible to use Record to open songs that have already been created in Reason.

advantages

Due to the self-contained system, Record offers a very high level of stability. Another advantage is the all-in-one concept, which was already used in Reason. Virtual instruments and effects are already included in the software and do not have to be purchased. As many modules can be integrated into the virtual rack as the computer used for them can process. Especially for beginners and small artists, it is a good start to familiarize yourself with music software in general. Due to the almost identical structure of the user interface, switching from Reason to Record is very easy. The fully integrated, digital mixer is also rated positively.

disadvantage

Due to the closed system, there is no possibility to expand the program with external plug-ins. Another major disadvantage is the lack of integration of VST instruments . The created pieces of music can only be exported in WAV and AIFF.
