Ableton Live is a sequencer from the Berlin software company Ableton and a tool for music production . Ableton Live is aimed both at the target group of live musicians / DJs who perform their music on stage in real time, as well as at producers who want to create musical arrangements with the help of this software . Ableton Live is more available for the macOS and Windows operating systems.

Live offers options such as real-time processing of audio sources ( samples ), which can be changed in tempo and independently in pitch ( time stretching ), modulated with effects or mixed with internal instruments. Audio sources can also be recorded in real time and virtual instruments or effects ( VST , ReWire etc.) can be controlled. In addition, Live is able to integrate MIDI devices into the performance. Live thus allows composing / improvising music in real time, whereby the software can also be controlled via MIDI controllers (e.g. keyboard, MIDI keyboard , mixer, etc.). Remote control via MIDI allows musicians to perform various manipulations at the same time, while this feature is rather limited with a mouse. For MIDI control, Ableton in cooperation with Akai designed a series of MIDI controllers specially tailored to live. The APC20, APC40 and, as a successor, the APC40mk2 were released under the Akai label, followed by the Push, which was also built by Akai but sold under the "Ableton" brand. The development and production of the Push2 was taken over separately from Akai by Ableton. Live can also be used as a sequencer when recording in the studio.

history

As of version 5, Ableton Live has a function called "Clip Freeze", which is used to reduce CPU usage. Frozen tracks cannot be edited, but they also no longer place a heavy load on the CPU. In addition, a large number of new and high-quality effects (six new / 22 in total) are included. The Phaser , Flanger , Auto Pan, Saturator, Arpeggiator and Beat Repeat effects are an integral part of Live from version 5 . In addition to WAV - and AIFF - the import of MP3 files is now also supported.

With Live 5.2 integrated Ableton native support for Intel -based Apple Macintosh - computer .

From version 6 onwards, further improvements can be found. In addition to the new " Sampler " instrument , the "Dynamic Tube" effect and the expansion of existing instruments and effects, Live is now also able to edit frozen tracks without thawing them out beforehand ("Deep Freeze"). Live 6 offers the possibility of not only grouping built- in and external instruments and effects in the device groups , but also organizing them in virtual racks and thereby controlling them centrally. The new features announced include: Multi-CPU / multi-core support, the ability to import films in QuickTime format and thus to dub them, to export sound tracks as individual files and direct support for numerous MIDI controllers. Version 6 can be delivered with an extensive library of sampled instrument sounds, the Essential Instrument Collection (EIC).

Version 7 was released in November 2007 and version 8 on April 2, 2009. Version 8 offers improvements in warping, a new groove function, the ability to combine tracks into groups, the new effects Vocoder, Looper, Limiter, Multiband Dynamics, Overdrive and Frequency Shifter as well as many other minor changes. In the suite or for a surcharge, there is the new virtual instrument Collision for percussive sounds and the sample library Latin Percussion.

Ableton Live 10

Live's user interface has been localized in different languages, including a German version.

From version 8.2.6, Live is compatible with the Mac OS X 10.7 Lion operating system and supports the “Impulse” controller series from Novation . Version 8.3 was released at the beginning of April 2012; from this version the program updates itself automatically. Audio files can now be uploaded directly from the program to a separate SoundCloud account. With the update to 8.3.1, compatibility with the OS X Mountain Lion operating system has been taken into account.

Version 9 brings support for the in-house hardware controller Push , the ability to record clip automation curves, a revised browser, multi-monitor support, the new glue compressor and the ability to convert audio clips into MIDI.

The Live 10 version, released on February 6, 2018, contains a wavetable synthesizer, two new effects and improved collaboration with Push. This now offers the possibility to visualize effects and midi notes.
