ReWire

ReWire is a software protocol for the transfer of control and audio data in real time between two or more audio programs . One program acts as a Rewire master and one or more as Rewire slaves. The number of available slaves is determined indirectly by the maximum number of channels of the ReWire implementation (256 in ReWire 2.0 version, 64 in ReWire 1.0). Often a sequencer is virtually wired to a software synthesizer . The direct data transfer saves the detour of importing MIDI or audio files .

ReWire was developed in 1998 by the Swedish music software manufacturer Propellerhead Software . The first compatible products were ReBirth RB-338 from Propellerhead and Cubase VST from Steinberg . In 2001, ReWire version 2.0 was expanded considerably and has since become the standard thanks to the support of many manufacturers.

ReWire is a proprietary protocol and is therefore not available in many open source programs. Although the protocol is provided free of charge, this only applies to audio technology developers and the ReWire source code may not be redistributed.
