Mountain Lion , fully OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 , is the ninth major version of macOS , Apple's desktop operating system . With this edition, the system line originally introduced as “Mac OS X” was renamed to “OS X” and the “Mac” in the name was dropped. This major version followed on from Mac OS X Lion and was released on July 25, 2012. It continues the integration of software for and design concepts from iOS that began with its predecessor .

Mountain Lion was sold exclusively via the Mac App Store , at a price of 17.99 euros or 20 francs. This distribution channel had already been introduced with the previous version, which, however, was still available on a USB storage medium. Three million copies of the software were sold in the first four days of its release, and seven million copies by mid-September 2012.

The operating system was first presented to the public as a beta version on February 16, 2012. The first developer preview was released on the same day.

The current version is macOS 10.8.5 from September 12, 2013. On October 22, 2013, OS X Mavericks was released as the successor to 10.8.
