El Capitan , fully OS X El Capitan 10.11 , is the twelfth major release of macOS , the desktop operating system from Apple . It is the successor to OS X Yosemite and was released on September 30, 2015. It is named after the monolith El Capitan in Yosemite National Park .

The successor macOS Sierra was released on September 20, 2016 .

Innovations (selection)

At the presentation at the WWDC keynote in the Moscone Center in San Francisco on June 8, 2015, performance increases and minor changes to the design were shown compared to version OS X 10.10.
