Yosemite ( [joʊˈsɛməti] ), fully OS X Yosemite 10.10 , is the eleventh major version of macOS , Apple's desktop operating system . It followed on OS X Mavericks and was released on October 16, 2014. A public beta program was also introduced, allowing one million users to sign up to test pre-release versions. It is named after Yosemite National Park and focuses on a revised user interface, expanded cloud functions and improved collaboration with iPhone and iPad .

On September 30, 2015, the successor OS X El Capitan was released.

Innovations (selection)

  • revised surface
  • Extended Spotlight functionality (e.g. Wikipedia access, map display)
  • new “Today view” in the notification center, similar to iOS, takes over part of the functionality of the dashboard with widgets
  • Mail - optional storage of mail attachments in the iCloud and sending a link instead of a file (mail drop) , annotation of attachments (markup)
  • Telephone calls, sending and receiving SMS (via an iPhone)
  • Handoff - continuation of supported programs on an iPad or iPhone
  • iCloud Drive - Access iCloud files as a folder in the Finder
  • Automation using JavaScript (in addition to AppleScript )
  • Dark mode (optional) - With the dark mode, system elements such as menu bars and the dock are colored in a transparent black
  • Apple Photos , as the successor to iPhoto and Aperture with update version 10.10.3 in April 2015.

System requirements

OS X Yosemite is compatible with the same hardware as the predecessors OS X 10.9 "Mavericks" and OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion".

  • iMac (from fifth generation, August 2007)
  • MacBook (from 13 "unibody model, 2008, from 13" model, beginning of 2009)
  • MacBook Pro (from 13 ″ model, seventh generation June 2009; from 15 ″ and 17 ″ model, third generation June 2007)
  • MacBook Air (from late 2008)
  • Mac mini (3rd generation or later March 2009)
  • Mac Pro (as of January 2008)
  • Xserve (from spring 2009)

According to Apple, certain functions such as handoff only work with newer hardware. Handoff, for example, requires Bluetooth 4.0 and has worked on the MacBook Air and Mac Mini from the device generation since 2011, on the MacBook Pro and iMac from devices manufactured in mid / late 2012.

The situation with the MacBook Air and the Mac Mini looks a bit more relaxed, because Apple had built in Bluetooth 4.0 here since 2011. "
