Apple's Dashboard ( Engl. For dashboard ) is an application in macOS for dashboards within the meaning of information management , can with what is information representing a clear and identified by Apple in Mac OS X Tiger (10.4) to MacOS Mojave is used (10:14) to mini-programs called widgets .

The program dashboard can (usually F4) be shown and hidden with a button . Widgets can usually be downloaded for free from the Internet. Up to OS X Yosemite, Dashboard could normally only be hidden, not switched off. However, it could also be completely deactivated using additional auxiliary programs.

Since Mac OS X Lion , the dashboard has been shown as a separate "space" in Mission Control by default. However, as in earlier versions, it can optionally be displayed as an overlay over the current screen content.

Since the introduction of widgets for the Notification Center in OS X Yosemite , the dashboard has been deactivated by default, but you can activate it in the settings. Dashboard has been removed with macOS Catalina .

There are three ways to program widgets. The most common form is based on HTML , CSS and JavaScript . With Mac OS X Leopard was Dashcode introduced a program that will make it much easier to create widgets. The option of creating widgets using Cocoa , which gives the developer more opportunities to intervene in the system, is less common . There are e.g. B. calendars, calculators, dictionaries, weather forecasts and games.
