Dashcode is a development environment from Apple for Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 and newer, with which you can easily create widgets for the Mac OS X dashboard as well as web applications for the iPhone and Apple Safari . Both are based on web standards such as HTML , CSS and JavaScript .

Dashcode offers a code editor, a large collection of ready-made elements that the developer can drag and drop onto the workspace and connect to his own or predefined JavaScript snippets, and a debugger . The latter can be used to interrupt the JavaScript code via breakpoints and execute it step by step and thus debug it. The Dashcode interface is based on Xcode and Interface Builder (icons, panels).

Dashcode was introduced at WWDC 2007 and was integrated into Xcode Tools 3.0 for the first time in Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 . There was also a version for Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 , which was quickly no longer supported. When the iPhone was launched, web apps programmed with Dashcode were the only way to run programs from other vendors. That only changed in spring 2008 when Apple introduced the iPhone SDK 2.0.

With Xcode 4.3, which combines the old Developer folder in a single application ( Xcode.app ), Dashcode is no longer part of the Developer Tools. However, it can still be downloaded for free from Apple's developer download portal (free registration is required.) In OS X Mavericks 10.9 , the current version of Dashcode, 3.0.5, is no longer supported. Upon request, Apple will announce that Dashcode will no longer be developed.
