Apple macOS Big Sur preview

macOS Big Sur 11.0 is the 17th major release of macOS , Apple's desktop operating system for Mac- branded desktop and laptop computers . It was presented on June 22, 2020 at the Worldwide Developers Conference and is named after the Big Sur coast of California . It is considered the most extensive technical and visual update since OS X Yosemite .

With Big Sur, macOS will officially run on ARM-based computers for the first time, which will initiate another processor change on Macs. The interface design and the underlying technologies have been adapted to the iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 operating systems , which have always run on ARM processors. Apple hopes this will secure the platform and simplify the development of software for several Apple platforms. Apple underlines these changes by changing the version number from 10 to 11: The version introduced at the time as Mac OS X (phonetically "Mac OS 10") , which replaced the classic Mac OS in version 9.x and is now simply OS X (analogously " Operating system ten ”) comes to an end with macOS Catalina (10.15) .

Innovations

In general, the system elements have been visibly rounded off. The dock and most of the pre-installed app icons are now rounded squares. They have been aligned with those of iOS and iPadOS, but added reflections and shadows. The menu bar is now transparent, and the control center known from the iPad has also been added in a slightly modified version. All pre-installed apps have a new sidebar . The notification center also has the widgets planned with the introduction of iOS 14 .

The Messages app was transferred from iOS to the Mac using Apple's software Catalyst and now shows all functions that are already known from mobile devices. Safari has been visually modernized, the start page can be changed, trackers are displayed more clearly, and the performance should be significantly better than that of the competitor Google Chrome .

System requirements

Big Sur supports the following existing Mac models:

Compared to macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave , the 2012 models of the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini as well as the 2012 and 2013 iMacs are no longer available. Support remains on MacBook, iMac Pro, and Mac Pro; they can be upgraded from Mojave or Catalina to Big Sur. MacOS 11 will also run on the Mac models announced for the end of 2020 with A-series ARM processors developed by Apple.
