High Sierra , completely macOS High Sierra 10.13 , is the fourteenth major release of macOS , the desktop operating system from Apple . On September 25, 2017, after a beta phase, it was officially released and made available for general download after being presented at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 5, 2017. High Sierra, like its predecessor macOS Sierra , is named after the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California .
The successor macOS Mojave has been available since September 2018.
System requirements
High Sierra runs on all Sierra-compatible devices: the MacBook Pro from mid-2010, on the MacBook from the end of 2009, on the MacBook Air from the end of 2010, the Mac Pro from mid-2010, the iMac from the end of 2009 and the Mac mini from the middle 2010. The MacOS server extension MacOS Server 5.4 from September 25, 2017 requires at least macOS High Sierra 10.13.
Innovations
On Macs with an integrated SSD , the file system is changed from HFS + to the new APFS when upgrading to this major version . With the introduction of HEVC, there are changes to the decoding and encoding of videos. The new image format for photos, HEIF , is also introduced. Basic requirements for the hardware decoding of HEVC are a MacBook or MacBook Pro from model year 2016, a 5K iMac from 2015 or a 21.5 ″ iMac from model year 2017.
Another new feature is the Metal 2 graphics framework ( low-level graphics API ) from Apple, which is intended to improve support for virtual reality (computer-generated 3D worlds). Support for external graphics cards (eGPU) via Thunderbolt 3 will follow in 2018.
In addition, some small new functions have been introduced in the Photos , Safari , Mail , Siri , Notes, Spotlight , iCloud and FaceTime apps .
history
After nine beta versions, the golden master release was published on September 14, 2017 . The first final version was released on September 25, 2017.

Serious security holes
On October 5th, 2017 it became known that the hard disk utility of macOS 10.13 reveals the password to an encrypted APFS volume on internal and external storage media in clear text when prompted for a password in the memory aid. On November 29, 2017, a serious security vulnerability in macOS High Sierra became known that enables a system takeover because local users can easily gain access to the root account and create a new administrator account. By levering out the password protection, z. B. the firewall can be deactivated. With active remote access, the bug could also be exploited remotely. Apple fixed the critical root vulnerability on November 29, 2017, but users of macOS 10.13.0 who imported the patch update and then updated it to macOS 10.13.1 received the bug back on their computers.
In January 2018, a second serious password problem in macOS 10.13, 10.13.1 and 10.13.2 became known: The system settings also accepted an incorrect password with any character string for the Mac App Store.
