High Efficiency Image File Format ( heif ) is a flexible container file format for images and image sequences, the various compression - algorithms supported. It was defined by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) (ISO / IEC 23008-12).

HEIF files are compatible with the ISO Base Media File Format ( ISOBMFF , ISO / IEC 14496-12) and can also contain other data streams such as text, GIF animations, alpha channels, depth information, live photos, bracketing and audio. Large images are divided into independent squares so that applications can load image sections while saving bandwidth.

Microsoft has supported HEIF since Windows 10 Update 1803 for display, from Update 1809 also for editing with Paint . The HEIF extension required for this from the Microsoft Store can be installed free of charge, but requires the HEVC extension in order to use the coding with High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). This can be installed from the store for € 0.99. However, there is also a free "HEVC extension from the device manufacturer" that can be installed via a link.

Apple supports HEIF with macOS High Sierra and iOS 11 and also uses HEVC, which also promises 40 percent space savings compared to JPEG , such as HEIF. iPhones and iPad use HEIF as standard from iOS 11; when transferring to PC or when sending z. Incompatibilities, for example by sharing, do not arise because the images are converted into the widely supported JPEG format; however, incompatibilities arise when using cloud services e.g. B. Google Photos.

The free graphics program GIMP has been supporting HEIF since release 2.10.2 and thus enables the format to be edited on the popular Windows , MacOS and Linux operating systems .

The High Efficiency Image File Format has the file extension .heifor .heic. The ending .heic is also intended to express that the content was encoded with the HEVC format.
