Apple Photos (officially only photos ) is a program for image management and editing for macOS and iOS . It is the successor to iPhoto and Aperture and offers the joint management of photos on mobile devices and stationary devices via synchronization either via iCloud or iTunes . It also supports non-destructive image editing , where edits are logged in separate files so that the original images are preserved.

history

The successor to iPhoto and Aperture was presented at the Apple developer conference. The iOS version was released together with the new version of iOS 8 on September 18, 2014 and immediately replaced the old photo management on iOS. The desktop version for Mac OS X, however, only came out with update 10.10.3 on April 8, 2015. On Mac OS X, the new operating system photo management software was installed parallel to the existing photo library, so that users had to consciously migrate to OS X. The announced plug-in interface for the desktop version appeared together with OS X El Capitan at the end of September 2015.

With macOS High Sierra , Apple has fundamentally revised Photos and added new functions. For example, Apple has added a new sidebar, which makes it easier to manage photos and albums , and an improved search function has been created with which it is also possible to search for photos according to specific criteria . In addition, the photo editing tools have been improved and expanded. Live photos from an iPhone or iPad can now be edited into photos and converted into a video. In addition, Photos in macOS High Sierra regularly creates flashbacks that can be used to play back related photos in a slide show .
