Apple Public Source License

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Apple Public Source License ( APSL ) is the open source license under which Apple made the Darwin operating system available.

The first version was only recognized by the Open Source Initiative , but the second version also complies with the guidelines of the Free Software Foundation . The license has a weak copyleft , which allows linking with proprietary libraries, but does not allow license changes for code published under this license . The latter makes the APSL incompatible with the GNU General Public License . The FSF sees this as two major problems and recommends not to distribute new projects under this license. The improvement of source code, which is already under the APSL, is not a problem for the FSF.

The license distinguishes between original and modified code. The creator of the code is solely liable for infringement of third party rights or software patents . Changes to the source code must therefore be explicitly marked with a date.
