history

The first version of the "Watch OS" operating system was presented on April 24, 2015 together with the Apple Watch.

The second version, watchOS 2, enables third-party providers to develop native apps for the Apple Watch app store and contained various other improvements. This version was presented to the public in June 2015 at WWDC 2015 and published on September 21, 2015.

The third version, watchOS 3, was presented to the public at WWDC 2016 in June 2016 and was released on September 13, 2016. WatchOS 3 is designed to further improve performance and adds new watch faces and preinstalled applications, such as reminders, breathing and home .

The fourth version, watchOS 4, was presented at WWDC 2017 in June 2017 and released in September 2017. WatchOS 4 includes new functions, such as a new Siri watch face and health improvements. WatchOS 4 was the final version for the first generation Apple Watch.

With watchOS 5, presented at WWDC 2018, published on September 17, 2018, numerous new functions (e.g. walkie talkie, extended activity functions, improved Siri, revised notifications) were introduced. New watch faces have also been introduced, some of which were developed exclusively for the larger display of the Apple Watch Series 4 and can only be selected on this model.

WatchOS 6 was shown for the first time at WWDC 2019. It offers new clock faces as well as new possibilities to evaluate your own activities. The App Store can now be operated directly on the watch and there are new standard apps such as: B. a calculator and an app for audio books. With a new widget it is now also possible to test how loud an environment is (in decibels ).

The latest version, watchOS 7, was released on June 22nd at WWDC 2020. first announced. Users now have the option of choosing from other workouts, such as the dance workout. Furthermore, starting with this version, users can now have their sleep tracked.

user interface

The start screen (also referred to as "carousel") consists of round application icons that can be zoomed in and out using a digital crown . The applications are started by touching the screen. Many of the apps are smaller, simplified versions of their iOS counterparts.

Checks provide quick access to a summary of the most popular apps that can be used on Apple Watch. The checks view is opened with a swiping gesture upwards from the watch face view. With watchOS 3, checks are replaced by a so-called dock, via which frequently used apps can be called up using the button on the side. If you now swipe from the bottom up, the control center appears.

With the help of the Force Touch screen, the watch can display various actions and options, depending on whether the user is just tapping the screen or pressing harder.
