Apple Pay is a payment system from the US company Apple for in-house mobile devices. It was introduced in the United States in October 2014 for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus . The payment system works using Near Field Communication (NFC) in combination with a wallet . Payments can also be made using the Apple Watch . The system can also be used to make payments in dedicated apps or in the Safari browser ( iOS , iPadOS and macOS ).

From July 2015, starting in the United Kingdom, the service was gradually made available in other countries. At the beginning of July 2016, Apple Pay was launched in Switzerland, in December 2018 in Germany and in April 2019 in Austria.

functionality

Apple Pay never sends the actual details of the credit card on file during the payment process. Instead, a device account number is saved for each stored card . This is a randomly generated 16-digit pseudo credit card number that is stored in the Chip Secure Element . This chip is isolated from the operating system and is not part of the backup. When setting up a card with the same information, different devices are assigned different device account numbers . When entering a new credit card in the wallet , in addition to the specific card data, device information such as the last digits of the cell phone number or the device name and the approximate location are forwarded to the issuing bank in order to avoid misuse when storing the card data. Map data stored on a device can be deleted by the user at any time. If the device is lost, this can be done via My iPhone or via the iCloud settings without direct access to it.

The device account number is sent to the seller with every transaction . In stationary retail, this takes place via near-field communication with a reader; in online retail, transmission takes place via the Internet. The seller transmits this number to the associated banking network, which can assign the device account number to the stored credit card data. It then sends the seller approval for the transaction. After receiving the approval, the seller sends the amount to be paid and his ID to the buyer's device. In the next step, the Apple Pay user must confirm this using their Touch ID (from iPhone X with FaceID ) or Apple Watch. The confirmation takes place by means of a cryptogram in which, among other things, a unique Card Validation Code (CVC), the amount, the seller and the authentication of the Apple Pay user on his specific device are stored in coded form. The structure of the cryptogram has not been published and therefore the completeness of this information cannot be checked. The cryptogram is forwarded to the banking network via the seller and the payment is made.

During the entire transmission, neither the credit card number nor any other sensitive data is transmitted, with the exception of the address (if postage is desired). In particular, the seller never receives the customer's actual credit card details, only the device account number and confirmation from the bank that this is linked to a valid card. The Device Account Number is only useful with a valid cryptogram and can only be used for transactions using a single specific Apple device. According to Apple, the card data required for Apple Pay is neither stored on the device nor on Apple's servers. The actual card number is therefore no longer visible to any of the parties involved in a transaction.

With the help of apps from various financial service providers, e.g. B. boon. and Bunq , it is possible to create a virtual debit card that can be topped up by a transfer and then integrated into the Apple Wallet so that Apple Pay services can be used without a physical credit card. In contrast to many free account offers, this incurs costs of up to 100 EUR per year.

Introduction and dissemination

Apple Pay Worldwide Availability:
Available (59 Countries) , Announced (5 Countries)

The company said in November 2015 that the service would be offered in over one million U.S. stores. At the time of its introduction in Switzerland in July 2016, around 70% of payment terminals supported Apple Pay.

In Germany, Apple Pay was officially launched on December 11, 2018. However, owners of a supported card from a country in which Apple Pay was already available could previously use it at all POS terminals that accepted the card without contact .

For a long time, Swiss banks preferred to use the Swiss payment solution Twint . After an intervention by the competition commission, Apple agreed to prevent the automatic activation of Apple Pay during the Twint payment process. In October 2016, Bank Linth was the first regional bank in Switzerland to start payment using Apple Pay in cooperation with Cornèr Bank . In contrast to Credit Suisse and UBS , PostFinance continues to rely on its own mobile payment solution.
