history

In 2003, the former CEO of Direkt Anlage Bank Matthias Kröner founded the Kölsch Kröner & Co. AG together with the former private customer director of the Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank Martin Kölsch.

In 2006 the company was renamed Fidor AG and in 2009 it was renamed Fidor Bank AG. The name Fidor is derived from Latin and can be translated as "I will be trusted". Originating in the context of the financial crisis , Fidor Bank wanted to counter the established banking industry with the new concept of a digital community bank that interacts strongly with its clientele via social media and accepts and implements their suggestions.

In May 2009, Fidor Bank AG was granted a full banking license by the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) in accordance with Section 32 of the KWG (German Banking Act).

In 2016, the French banking group BPCE took over Fidor Bank AG for around EUR 100 million. With the purchase of Fidor Bank AG, BPCE pursued the goal of driving its digital transformation and expanding its private customer business in Europe. Fidor Bank AG wanted to continue growing with the capital gained, in particular by expanding abroad.

In autumn 2018 it became known that the BPCE banking group was considering selling Fidor Bank AG. After negotiations had been slow for several months, Matthias Kröner announced his resignation as CEO in April 2019 "by mutual agreement" . He was succeeded by Boris Joseph in July of the same year.

The Fidor Bank has received several national and international awards, for example as Innovator of the Year 2019 by the business magazine brand eins .
