Openbank is a Spanish online bank that has been part of Santander since it was founded in 1995 . It is registered in the banking register of the Bank of Spain with the bank code 0073.

It is a multichannel bank with which business can be carried out both by telephone and via the Internet. It has a physical office in Madrid .

In 2019 it had more than 1.2 million customers.

history

In 1995, Santander initiated Openbank as the first direct telephone bank and first toll-free financial institution with more than 100,000 customers.

In 1996, the first official Openbank website was created, making Openbank the first direct bank in Spain to offer its customers banking services over the Internet and by telephone.

In 1999 Openbank founded the first online broker with immediate processing of transactions in the national and international markets.

After purchasing the Argentinian portal Patagon.com, developed by young entrepreneurs Wenceslao Casares and Constancio Larguía, on March 9, 2000 for $ 540 million, Openbank changed its name to Patagon Internet Bank, SA, a finance portal that combines traditional banking operations with new digital functions such as Linked chats and forum blogs and, anticipating the latest social networks, founded a virtual community for his customers.

In 2001 Patagon Internet Bank, SA opened offices in Madrid, Barcelona , Valencia , Zaragoza and Pamplona . In 2002 it became the first on-line financial institution to generate profit in Spain thanks to the outsourcing of all its technical and business support areas to the Santander Group , with which it has signed supplier-customer service agreements. In addition, it was the first and only AENOR-certified e-business good practice bank.

In 2005 the company reverted to its original name, Openbank, and in 2007 it migrated its entire technology platform to the common platform of the Santander Group .

In 2008 the bank had 500,000 customers and in 2010 it became part of Banca Comercial España and began offering services for the university segment and developing an active presence on social networks.

In February 2011, she introduced mobile banking and became the first bank with a native application for iPad .

In March 2011, following its integration into Banca Comercial España, the company decided to close 20 of the 21 branches that were still open. The only branch that remained open was Azca's Madrid branch.

In February 2013, it launched mobile applications for Android and Windows 8 .

In May 2017, it changed its corporate image and renamed some of its products. In addition, the company opened its new branch at Paseo de la Castellana 134 in Madrid to create an exclusive space for its customers.

In June 2017, the company launched its new digital web platform and app to improve usability.

In 2019 it started its international expansion in Germany , the Netherlands and Portugal .
