history
Northland Power was founded in 1987 as an independent power producer . The company has been listed as a public company on the Toronto Stock Exchange since 1997 . The company belongs there to the S & P - indices Clean Technology , Capped Utilities and SmallCap .
Since its inception, the company has grown through the development of its own projects and through the purchase of stakes in existing plants. Currently (as of 2014) the company operates 20 systems with a total installed capacity of around 1.3 GW , including seven gas and biomass power plants , four wind parks and eight PV solar parks . More than a dozen other plants are in the development, planning or construction phase, including the large Dutch offshore wind farm Gemini (600 MW).
In 2014 Northland Power acquired a majority stake in the German offshore wind farm Nordsee One (332 MW), which is currently in the development phase, and its successors 2 and 3 from RWE Innogy .
