Apple Wallet (briefly Wallet , formerly Passbook ) is a program from the technology company Apple that can be used to store vouchers , boarding passes and similar virtual objects, for example in order to be able to identify yourself or carry out mobile payment transactions.

"Wallet" was announced as "Passbook" in June 2012 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) and published on September 12, 2012. The application is an integral part of Apple iOS  6 and is therefore installed ex works. As of iOS 9, the app was renamed Wallet. There are now also apps for Android and Windows Phone that can use .pkpass files used by Wallet accordingly.

history

In the course of the increasing spread of Near Field Communication (NFC) in modern smartphones , it was speculated that Apple could also integrate a corresponding chip into its iPhone. According to Phil Schiller, however, the company decided against this technology because the needs of customers could be met without it. According to his statement, the transmission of boarding passes and other objects over the Internet is more suitable, since the stored data can be updated anywhere.

Apple presented Wallet as part of the opening speech at its in-house exhibition WWDC. In addition to Apple Maps , about which numerous details were known in advance, the program was presented as one of the most important innovations of iOS 6. With the first beta version it was delivered to registered developers, although the functions could not be actively used due to the lack of integration into other apps. It wasn't until the official launch of iOS 6.0 on September 12, 2012 that some providers began to support wallet. Lufthansa , for example, was one of the pioneers of the platform .

With iOS 8.1 from October 2014, Wallet was expanded and now also offers payment functions for storing credit and debit cards as well as support for Apple Pay . With iOS 9 announced in June 2015, the app was renamed Wallet.

Due to the high market share of iOS and the fact that wallet is an integral part of the operating system, the app quickly achieved a high level of popularity. In contrast to other platforms in the field of mobile payment , it is particularly well received by airlines : In addition to Lufthansa and TUIfly , for example Ryanair , Air China , Air Canada , American Airlines , United Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines support the filing of a boarding pass in a wallet. Even e-tickets of the Deutsche Bahn and the Swiss Federal Railways and the Allianz Arena can be stored in Wallet.

The American coffee house chain Starbucks has also been supporting mobile payment since 2015, where the information on the user account (account balance) is saved in a wallet card and a QR code is generated for payment .

technology

Wallet works with files of the file type .pkpass . As soon as iOS detects a corresponding file, the operating system offers to open and store it in Wallet. Despite the different ending, these files are actually a ZIP archive in which all the objects required for a passport are summarized. In addition to graphics and text that are necessary for displaying an entry, two files are particularly important: First, a JSON definition of the appearance and metadata that refer to a web service for the update, for example . Second, a digital signature, which has to be generated with a developer's personal certificate and is intended to prevent a passport from being tampered with by third parties.

A special program is not necessary to provide files for Wallet. Shortly after the publication of Wallet, numerous offers were developed that enable even inexperienced users to create a pass using a graphical interface or a simple assistant. For most of these services it is not necessary to be a member of Apple's iOS Developer Program in order to sign the wallet file, as the signature of the service can be used.
