Microsoft Wallet is a mobile payment and cyber wallet service from Microsoft that enables payments with the Microsoft smartphone models Microsoft Lumia 950 , Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and Microsoft Lumia 650. Microsoft Wallet does not require specific terminals for contactless payment , but can be operated with the existing terminals. In January 2019 it was announced that the service would be discontinued from February 28, 2019.

history

Microsoft Wallet was released in the United States on June 21, 2016 . Initially, the software will only be available to participants in the Windows Insider customer program ; it will then be generally available in the USA in summer 2016. Microsoft Wallet was only released for the Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile operating system , at the same time as an update to the Wallet mobile app .

The publication of Microsoft Wallet is thus the start of a company's own mobile payment system from Microsoft. The software company avoids previous dependencies on third parties when operating contactless payment systems on Windows-based smartphones. Microsoft's operating system for mobile devices supported contactless payments for NFC- equipped cell phones under Microsoft Windows Phone 8 through the original wallet app back in 2012 . However, Microsoft was dependent on the cooperation of third parties to carry out the payment transactions. Mobile phone providers had to equip their customers with so-called Secure Element SIM cards . In addition, in the USA, the wireless service providers AT&T , T-Mobile US and Verizon insisted on using their jointly developed and operated Softcard platform for payment processing . When Google first bought Softcard at the beginning of 2015 and then ceased operations, the Windows platform remained in the US without a usable mobile payment system.

With Microsoft Wallet, Microsoft can now work directly with banks and credit card companies to make contactless payments possible again on Windows-based smartphones.
