XQuartz is a display server for X11. A window manager is also required.

XQuartz , formerly X11 (also X11.app), is Apple's implementation of the X Window System (X11) for macOS ("OS X" until 2016, before that "Mac OS X" until 2012). XQuartz is based on the X.Org server and extends it, among other things, with the hardware-accelerated 2D display Quartz , hardware-accelerated OpenGL and better integrates it into Aqua , the graphical user interface of macOS.

history

X11 was available in a beta version for Mac OS X 10.2 ("Jaguar," 2002) and later became a standard package for Mac OS X Panther (10.3, 2003). It can be selected as an optional package during installation, subsequently installed from the installation media or downloaded from Apple's homepage.

The optional installation package for Mac OS X Tiger (10.4, 2005) used X11 version 6.6, “X11R6.6” as the basis. This implementation included an XFree86 4.4 based X server, a window manager that was “rootless”, and basic utilities such as xterm . “Rootless” meant that the X applications appeared on the Quartz desktop, running like any other application in a normal window and not in a separate environment such as Virtual PC .

In Mac OS X Leopard (10.5, 2007) to Mac OS X Lion (10.7, 2011), X11 was installed by default. It was rewritten and was now based on the more popular X.Org server "X11R7.2" instead of XFree86.

Since OS X Mountain Lion (10.8, 2012), X11 is no longer part of the operating system. Instead, Apple supports the open source further development of XQuartz and refers to this external open source project.
