xterm is a terminal emulator and part of the graphical X Window System (“X” for short). A user can start any number of instances of xterm on the same screen (X display); each instance then provides a simulated terminal for the process running in it . Xterm is often used to represent and interact with a Unix shell .
Xterm was originally developed as a stand-alone terminal for the VS100 by Mark Vandevoorde, a student of Jim Gettys , in the summer of 1984. Xterm is therefore a bit older than X itself. It quickly became clear that it made more sense to develop xterm as part of X and not as an independent project. For this reason, it was included in the X project soon after it was created.
After many years as part of X, the line of development shifted to the XFree86 project (which then worked with version X11R6.3) around 1996 and is currently maintained by Thomas Dickey.
Many different variants have been developed since the first xterm version, one of the more well-known examples being rxvt . In the popular desktop environments , xterm has also been supplemented by numerous alternatives such as console (in KDE ) or Gnome Terminal (in GNOME ).
