XDarwin was a port of the X Window System for early versions of Darwin and Mac OS X . Darwin is the basis ( English core system ) of Mac OS X, which was called “OS X” from 2012 and called “macOS” since 2016, which originally lacked an X server, and thus enables X Window programs to be run . It was available for the x86 (Darwin only) and ppc processor architectures . Before Apple's own X11 was introduced , XDarwin was the only X server that was also available for Mac OS X.

XDarwin was ported from the XonX project, an offshoot of the XFree86 project. In the first versions, XDarwin needed a running window manager (X Window Manager), for which the Oroborus based window manager OroborOSX was written. This was modified by the original look of Mac OS X, so that the windows do not look strange on the desk surface and integrate better into Mac OS X.

The source texts were integrated into those of the XFree86 and Xorg servers and maintained there. According to the XonX project, X11 and later also XQuartz contain code from XDarwin.

From Mac OS X 10.2 "Jaguar" by a beta version of was optionally X11.appavailable and in version 10.3 "Panther" Apple's own X11 was ready, but in contrast to XDarwin not suitable for Darwin and not for x86.

XDarwin could also run " rootless " in later versions , the OroborOSX window manager was no longer a requirement and windows thus integrated seamlessly into the look of the Mac OS X on which they were running.

In 2007, Apple handed over the development of its own X11, called XQuartz , to a free developer community. XDarwin was abandoned or partially integrated in favor of XQuartz.
