Panther , complete Mac OS X Panther 10.3 , the fourth major release of macOS , the desktop operating system from Apple that was introduced at that time under the name of Mac OS X. Apple released "Panther" on October 24, 2003. It followed Mac OS X 10.2 "Jaguar" and was superseded by Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.

The last version is 10.3.9 from April 15, 2005.

Innovations

Apple listed more than 150 new features for Mac OS X 10.3:

  • Finder , with a new metal design, a new search function, customizable sidebar
  • Support of packed files (.zip)
  • Quick user change without logging out
  • Exposé, clear arrangement and selection of windows at the push of a button
  • TextEdit opens Microsoft Word documents (.doc).
  • Xcode , an integrated development environment with the new compiler version gcc 3.3.
  • "Preview" program with faster PDF display
  • QuickTime with new video codecs
  • Read -only access to NTFS partitions and journaling with HFS +

User functions

  • New font management
  • FileVault for encrypted home directories
  • iChat AV for video conferencing.
  • X11 server
  • Safari as a replacement for Internet Explorer

System requirements

Panther is the last Mac operating system that does not yet run on Intel Macs.

  • PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor with at least 233 MHz
  • 128 MB RAM (512 MB recommended)
  • 1.5 GB of free space on the hard drive
  • CD drive for installation

Video conferencing require:

  • 333 MHz or faster PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
  • Broadband internet connection (100 kbit / s or faster)
  • Compatible FireWire DV camera or web camera

Old programs that run under Mac OS 9 are still supported through the Classic environment . However, the real Mac OS 9 required for virtualization must be purchased separately.
