TextEdit is a program supplied by Apple with the macOS operating system for editing texts. Originally TextEdit was part of NeXTStep , there is also a version for GNUstep .

description

In Mac OS X (now macOS), TextEdit replaced the SimpleText program that was previously delivered with the classic Mac OS and was used to display text accompanying programs. Compared to SimpleText, TextEdit has been expanded, so the range of functions of TextEdit now clearly exceeds that of Microsoft's WordPad .

TextEdit offers drag and drop of text, images and attachments, viewing and editing of documents of various formats.

Like SimpleText, TextEdit allows texts to be read aloud; to do this, it uses the voice output of the operating system. The spell check provided by the operating system is also used.

TextEdit supports Apple Advanced Typography , which makes more complex typographical options such as ligatures accessible via the font palette.

Supported formats

Trivia

The high-resolution icon of TextEdit shows the text of Think Different from Mac OS X Leopard to OS X Mavericks .
