The Mac App Store is an online platform operated by the US company Apple for the distribution of software for the in-house operating system macOS . A large part of the software offered does not come from Apple itself, but from third parties, companies as well as free software developers .

The sales platform itself is similar to the App Store opened in 2008 for the iOS operating system, which is also its own .

history

The Mac App Store was announced on October 20, 2010 as part of the “Back to the Mac” event. Since November 3, 2010, software developers registered with the Apple Developer Connection (ADC) have been able to submit software for the sales platform. Version 1.0 was released on January 6, 2011 together with Mac OS X 10.6.6 . On the first day, Apple reported more than a million downloaded programs.

After its release in July 2011, the Mac OS X Lion operating system was initially only available from the Mac App Store; it was only a few weeks later that it appeared on a physical medium.

On December 12, 2011, Apple announced that more than 100 million apps had been downloaded from the Mac App Store. OS X Lion and updates to programs that have already been downloaded were not counted.

New design of the Mac App Store

With the release of MacOS Mojave on September 24, 2018, Apple brought out a redesigned Mac App Store.

The design has been adapted more to that of iOS and some functions have also been adopted. Developers can now embed videos in the app description and respond to reviews in the Mac App Store. In addition, an Apple editorial team will present new apps and give tips on how to use them.

These changes led some developers to offer their apps in the store again, as many were previously dissatisfied with the handling by Apple.

Development of software for the store

Apple offers the Xcode development environment free of charge, but a fee-based registration with the Mac Developer Program is required to publish a program in the Mac App Store . Apple reviews each submitted program and makes a decision on approval.

With iTunes Connect , developers can keep an overview of the purchases and downloads of their item.

Programs can be offered for free or for a fee. The price is determined by the developer, and the prices follow a tier scheme ( price tiers ) specified by Apple . 30% of the turnover is retained by Apple as fees.
