Nuendo is a sequencer and primarily a digital audio signal processing program from the German company Steinberg . Since version 10 it has had the same functions of the Cubase program from the same manufacturer . For example, there is direct support for surround sound production, which is why this program is often used for dubbing films, as well as administrative network functions, additional automation and control systems, recording lengths that go beyond the so-called day limits of the timeline, adaptation of video material audio recordings, the use of several recording media within a project and integration or compatibility with special, internationally common dubbing tools. Only professional sheet music printing, sheet music editor, drum editor and some of the virtual instrument plug-ins included in the Cubase product line had to be purchased in the past using an expansion kit. Since version 10, Nuendo has the full scope of Cubase 10, i.e. the same instrument plug-ins, note editor and drum editor as Cubase 10 and no longer requires an expansion kit.

Nuendo is available for the Microsoft Windows and macOS operating systems.

A sound card , if possible with a fast ASIO driver, is required for recording and playing back audio material . A suitable interface must be connected to the computer to record MIDI data . External sound generators (e.g. synthesizers ) and MIDI input devices (MIDI keyboard, MIDI guitar, MIDI controller, etc.) can be connected to the PC and thus to the audio signal processing software via MIDI.

The file formats are compatible , so a project created with Cubase versions can also be opened with Nuendo without any problems, and vice versa.

In order to prevent unauthorized distribution of the programs, Steinberg uses dongles as copy protection for its programs. Nuendo uses USB dongles; Steinberg purchased the technology for this from the German company Syncrosoft in October 2008.
