biography

Beginnings

In the early 90s they both made music under the name Planet Claire and released the album of the same name, produced by Peter Hayo.

Even in their early synth-pop times in the early 90s, Booka Shade saw themselves primarily as a touring band. Finally converted to house, techno and trance from the underground clubs of these days, Kammermeier and Merziger began to publish on labels such as R&S , Music Man , Tommy Boy and Harthouse , before they degenerated with the trance classic Una musica senza ritmo in 1993 and then the first big hits landed on the Dutch label Touché in the mid-90s with the progressive tracks Kind of Good and Silk .

Towards the end of the 90s there were collaborations with DJ T. and their long-time friends Patrick Bodmer and Philipp Jung, also known as MANDY , which later led to the foundation of the Get Physical label . Booka Shade have worked there as producers since the label was founded in 2002, including the releases of MANDY, DJ T., Sunsetpeople and Chelonis R. Jones . As a result, Get Physical grew rapidly and is now a very respected label in the electronic music field.

breakthrough

In 2004 Booka Shade released their debut album Memento on Get Physical. This was followed by the collaboration with MANDY, which led to the single "Body Language" and made Booka Shade an internationally recognized act. The title was voted a club hit, “Ibiza Track of the Season” and “Track of the Year” by DJ Mag . At the same time, Booka Shade's solo single "Mandarine Girl" had a similar success and was performed in her live shows at the Sonar Festival 2005 in Barcelona and with Mylo in London. Finally, an invitation followed to go on tour with Röyksopp and appear as the opening act for Depeche Mode in Berlin.

As a result, Booka Shade became coveted and much sought-after remixers, among others in the service of renowned acts such as Moby, The Juan McLean, Yello, Hot Chip, Depeche Mode, Roxy Music, Dubfire, Tiga, Dave Gahan and The Knife.

At the end of 2006, English online mag resident advisor voted Booka Shade the best live act and their second long player, Movements, the best album. Movements was released in May 2006 and contains the two previous successes and the well-known numbers "Night Falls", "In White Rooms" and "Darko". "In White Rooms" and "Night Falls" became the two best-selling EPs in the 2006 catalog of vinyl distributor Intergroove .

The US music website Pitchfork had “In White Rooms” in their list of the best tracks of the year, while in Germany in the year-end poll of Groove magazine Booka Shade was voted the second best producer of the year by readers and Movements made it into their top -Ten-best list of albums of the year. Movements was touted as one of the best 100 albums of all time by US magazine XLR8R.

present

In 2007 Booka Shade completed their Movements world tour in which they played 150 shows in just under 20 months; at the same time they released their singles "Tickle / Karma Car" and "Numbers", both of which received international attention. The latter was a decoupling from her contribution to the legendary DJ-Kicks series; the album earned high recognition from all sides and was voted “Compilation of the Year” by the influential British DJ Mag, as well as being voted an honorable second place by Mixmag . The two remixes that Booka Shade delivered, one for Dave Gahan's “Kingdom” and the other for Dubfire's “I Feel Speed”, both made it to the top of the DJ charts worldwide.

In February 2008 they released the Movements Tour Edition, which presented the 2006 hit album "Movements" in its original version together with a new live DVD, "We Came To Dance"; Among other things, you can find a recording of Booka Shade's live show at the Belgian Pukkelpop Festival last year, a tour documentary by the band and many bonus tracks. In March 2008 the duo released their next single, followed by their third studio album "The Sun & the Neon Light" in May. On November 1st, 2013 the album "Eve" was released.
