Temex

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Temex ( Telemetry Exchange ) was a data transmission service (also known as telecontrol service) of the Deutsche Bundespost .

Temex has been developed since 1981 and was initially to be offered to a limited group of customers from 1985 and later expanded across the board. However, the introduction only followed in 1988 and was discontinued in 1994.

Temex is a data-over-voice technology. With splitters ( crossovers ) at both ends of a telecommunication line, it was possible to couple audio signals between 38 kHz and 40 kHz. The data transfer rate of the Temex service was very low, but sufficient, as only status changes were transferred.

The following were determined as possible uses:

  • Electricity and gas meter readings should be read by the utility company via serial output, see Electricity Meters
  • The room temperature should be called up via temperature sensors and the heating system should be adjustable via actuators and the fire brigade should be alerted in the event of a fire , see fire alarm systems
  • Sensors should be used to check whether valuable objects are still in their place or to detect possible break-ins using electrical contacts on windows and doors and forward them to the police or a security company, see alarm system
  • Elderly and disabled people should reach an emergency call center using an alarm button worn on their body or in the apartment, see: House emergency call .

In June 1984, the data protection officers of the federal and state governments demanded clear legal regulations for the planned introduction in connection with Temex. According to the state commissioner for data protection in Hamburg, Claus Henning Schapper, a protected privacy and the inviolability of the apartment as described in the Basic Law had to be guaranteed from the outset .
