DJ Thomilla
Thomilla (born January 19, 1974 in Stuttgart ; formerly DJ Thomilla ), real name Thomas Burchia , is a German DJ , music producer and composer . He is part of the DJ and dance music producer duos Turntablerocker and Bodymovin . In the 1990s he made an active contribution to the Stuttgart hip-hop scene.
Career
Thomilla earned his first recognition in the early 1990s as a DJ and producer of the self-sufficient Stuttgart hip-hop formation Kolchose , from which Massive Töne , Afrob and the circle of friends around Max Herre emerged. Thomilla worked as a live DJ in the group "Die Krähen", which was formed in 1994. With this band he released the LP "Benztown" on the Hamburg label Buback . Since the founding of the production company Benztown, which he ran with his business partner and producer Peter Hoff, Thomilla has increasingly appeared as a producer in addition to his work as a DJ. With a remix for the song "Picknicker" produced in 1996 for Die Fantastischen Vier , he first became known throughout Germany. In the course of his music career, Thomilla worked with greats in German hip-hop such as Fünf Sterne deluxe , Massive Töne , Thomas D , Spezializtz , Fischmob and Ferris MC . By collaborating with artists like Afrob, Joy Denalane and Gentleman , he boosted the club suitability of hip-hop, soul and R&B in Germany. He has also remixed international stars such as Outkast , Raphael Saadiq & Q-Tip , Bounty Killer and Mary J Blige.
Thomilla and the Fantastischen Vier work closely together . In 1999 they took him on tour as support in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Thomilla was active as a composer, producer and remixer on her gold and platinum albums "Viel", "Fornika", "Für Dich Immer noch Fanta Sie" and "Rekord". As a side coach for Michi Beck and Smudo from Die Fantastischen Vier , DJ Thomilla works on Pro7 and Sat.1 in the course of the television program "The Voice of Germany" and behind the scenes is also a contact and adviser for many of the participating artists in the Fanta team. In addition, the two debut albums of "The Voice of Germany" winners from season 4 & 5 Charley Ann Schmutzler and Jamie-Lee Kriewitz were recorded and produced by DJ Thomilla in his Berlin studio.
Participation in the "Turntablerocker" project
Thomilla and Michael Beck aka "Hausmarke" met for the first time in 1994 in a record store where Thomilla worked as a salesman. At the time, he was playing at the popular Red Dog disco. Both artists quickly discovered that they share similar tastes in music. After the regular encounters in the record store, it was decided that Michi Beck should join the Red Dog Wednesday team. The small club became the birthplace of the DJ and producer team Thomilla and Michi Beck. After the Red Dog closed, the two began touring as a DJ team. Above all, they tried to counter the German club scene, which is dominated by house and techno, with a mix of East Coast rap, soul and R'nB suitable for dancing. They called this danceable mixture "Boogie". As a result of the joint studio work between 1996 and 1997, Michi Beck's solo album, “Worldwide”, developed. This was produced by Thomilla in Benztown Studio. The track Turntablerocker contained on this album gave the DJ duo its name. In the following years the three albums "Classic" (2001), "Smile" (2002) and "EinsZwei" (2012), as well as several Maxis were created.
Solo career
In 2000, Thomilla's first solo concept album, “Genuine Draft”, was released, which he had recorded with several prominent German and foreign hip-hop artists including Afrob, Gentleman, Ferris MC, MC Rene , Spezializtz and Zora . With the aim of involving as many as possible in his project, he started a year earlier a broadcast to befriended musicians. The importance of this album was not limited to the wide range of diverse musical characters, it also marked the beginning of a series of records in which the DJs were increasingly placed at the center of the rap scene. The album made it to number 11 and stayed in the German charts for six weeks. In 2004 Thomilla presented his second album, "Freeze", which again demonstrated his skills as a songwriter. Musically, the record marked a departure from hip-hop influenced grooves. Thomilla mixes electro, pop, funk, hip-hop and dance elements "into an idiosyncratic sounding cocktail" and thus realizes his own version of pop music. In contrast to Genuine Draft, Thomilla largely dispensed with samples. While working on this album, he started taking guitar lessons. This is how many sketches for "Freeze" on the guitar were made.
Participation in the "Bodymovin" project
Thomilla and DJ Friction (member of the Freundeskreis trio ) started the “Bodymovin” project in 2004 after the tour of the same name for their last albums (Thomilla “Freeze” and DJ Friction “Soulsonic”). The two musicians had known each other since the early 1990s. As members of the Kolkhoz Posse, they had the same roots and went through a similar musical development. Even on the Turntablerocker tours, DJ Friction was there as DJ and band support. At the time, the two were already producing tracks together and had supported each other with guest contributions on their solo albums. In 2009 the duo's first joint album, “Bodymovin”, was released. Musically, the two do not commit themselves to a certain genre, but let their preferences for disco-funk from the early 1980s, electro-boogie, but also deep house productions be felt.
